According to this story, we would need special tv's.

The HDMI spec for 3d over blu-ray got finalized with version 1.4. There are BD titles out now in 3d but use the typical 3d glasses. Avatar on BD might be the first one that follows the 1.4 spec... you'll need a HDMI 1.4 compatable BD player, cables, and display when the day comes that they do it right using polarized glasses, etc.

I don't see this 3d thing taking off in the home environment (and so do a ton of industry analyst) anytime soon if ever. It's nice to see at a movie theater (albeit gimmicky) but until they can ditch the glasses, I don't see it going over in a big way.

I do alot of gaming but even there I dont see it taking off either. Untill they have the technology to make it 3d without the use of goofey glasses it will remain a gimmick.

I just want to skip it all and go straight to holograms

The HDMI 1.4 spec is just for full 1080p 3d. It's still possible to have 1080i 3d through the HDMI 1.3 spec but the Player (blu-ray player, ps3, etc) would have to set the picture up and send the frame across to the tv already in 3d mode (checkerboard).

Some Mitsubishi and Samsung DLP TVs can display a 3d image, you have to wear glasses of course.

The Avatar video game supports a variety of 3d formats, although I haven't tried them out yet.

My Mitsu DLP (65" Diamond Series) supposedly has the ability to do 3D programming, but I haven't actually tried it.

Yeah my buddy up here has a newer Mistu 65" and he says his has a 3D feature and plug on the side for some accessory. I was just going off the news story though, and actually I figured any tv would be able to do it. New 3D at the theaters doesnt look much different than the older 3D stuff when you take the glasses off.

I've got Journey to the Center of the Earth with Brendan Fraser in 3D. The disc came with like four 3D glasses. The disc had the 3D version on one side and 2D on the other. It looked pretty good on my DLP TV.

I don't see why AVATAR couldn't do something similar.

CES is going on right now in Vegas and 3D home TV's are the biggest part of the whole thing. Tons of manufactures are working on them, as are BD player builders.

The ps3 will natively support 3D in future firmware updates.
