Sound Bar?

I am not an audiophile, nor do I have tons of money, but I am in need of a decent yet small speaker set. My living room is about 13x15 with a vaulted ceiling. I don't really listen to my music nor TV loud, but when friends come over and play Rockband we really crank it up. My current setup is an Onkyo TX-SR304 receiver and old Sony surround sound speakers (all mounted in front anyhow). The main speakers are about 3.5 feet tall and take up too much room. We need something smaller, but that can still sound good when loud. We saw a sound bar on Amazon a couple of weeks ago and it peaked our interest. Do they sound good? Any recommendations? Trying to keep it cheap and must be under $500. I can use my existing receiver if it helps.

I thought the "soundbars" I've seen are more for surround effects than anything else, but I could be wrong. The quality of surround-sound they produce is pretty good for what it is. I was going to use one under the flat-panel I have over my fireplace to keep the floor uncluttered.
