? about receivers. Does it really make a difference if it has dolby/thx/dts/etc...

Looking for a new receiver and I was told at one time that I would want to get one that was thx/dolby/dts certified. I was looking at a yamaha 525w http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Yamaha+-...&skuId=9245471 but it doesn't have a thx certification(it does have Include Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital EX, Dolby Pro Logic IIx, DTS, DTS-HD, DTS-ES, DTS 96/24 and Dolby Neo:6 decoding). Would it really make that big of a difference as far as sound quality while watching a movie? I read a lot of reviews on that receiver and everyone has rated it pretty high as far as mid level receivers go.

I've had Sony, JVC, and Onkyo. Onkyo separates itself from the pack. That's the product that I would recommend. You can get an Onkyo with HDMI switching and HD audio decoding for the same price or even cheaper.

You can live without THX certification. It's a quality assurance stamp from THX labs that comes at a price to the manufacturer, which is then passed on to the consumer. Take a look at the prices of the Onkyo THX Select2 & Ultra 2. Cool, but ridiculous prices.

I just bought this at Best Buy about 2 weeks ago. I love it so far and I like the fact that it comes with a wire set so you can hook up your iphone/ipod up to it. I also use the zone two features alot because I have speakers on the patio.

I'm pretty sure if your dvd player doesn't recognize dts or thx, it won't be sent to your receiver... make sure they're compatible
