HD TV sound issue

I've got a wierd problem. I have a sony 1080p lcd tv. I have it hooked up to my ps3 as well as my cable box (hd cable).

My PS3 works perfect, Bluerays play fine as well as games and streaming.
the hd cable box is my issue. non hd channels work fine but on any hd station the sound will randomly cut out. I have switched inputs on the tv and swapped the hdmi cables with the same results. I was convinced it was the cable company (they've tried 3 boxes too). tonight i noticed if i rewind a recorded show in hd that it doesnt always cut out in the same place. So now i'm thinking the sound just cant keep up. the hd picture is perfect the whole time and on br movies there are no problems, which lead me to believe the cables are fine

looking for any advice at this time because I'm out of ideas and it is REALLY annoying to cut out randomly during a show!
