And most importantly, how much $$$$ can you spend on this?

You may change your mind when you find out how expensive this stuff gets. I have a little over a couple thousand sunk into mine and it is by no means top of the line.

A high end 5.1 setup would cost $20-25k for the speakers, $3-5k for the receiver, and then another $5k or so for the amps to drive the speakers. This doesn't include cd/dvd/blu-ray players or anything.

Dont get me wrong, we are just stating that its like everything else where there is no limit to what you can spend. I would say that for around 1k you could have a 5.1 with a blu-ray and the quality would be a better than one of the home theater in the box systems. Plenty if you just want the effect of surround sound. If you shop used stuff on craigslist or ebay and find some good deals then you can double your quality for roughly the same price.

I think my setup was pretty good for bang for the buck. Listening to the $50k setups, I could hear a little difference, but not 10x. Maybe 20-25% better IMO.
