DirecTV -

I didn't see it, but I heard a commercial for DirecTV last night while moving some shit around in another room. I didn't catch the whole thing, either. However, I swear the commercial said they broadcast in 1080p.

Can anyone verify that they have started broadcasting in 1080p? I seriously doubt it, and think I missed something, but if so, it's time to switch.

You can download 1080p programming but not through the satellite.

I couldn't disagree with you more. They have more HD channels than anyone else. That alone is the deciding factor for me. I also like their guide/menu a lot better than any other I've used. The customer service is terrible, but I've managed to get what I want from them.

What do you dislike about Dish?

Theyre a horrible company. Poorly ran. Customer service is terrible! Their equipment is just now getting better. For the past 10 years their receivers have been junk. If you ever cancel Dish, when you mail in your old boxes for the lease return, you better write those tracking numbers down.

I was a dish customer for 4 years, I was happy with their programming, but when something goes wrong goodluck trying to find someone in the US to talk to.

A website that doesn't work for anything, including paying your bill. Complete and total lack of customer service in attempting to resolve any issues with paying the bill.

My HD DVR receiver would come up at midnight everynight to download updates and it's as noisy as any PC I've ever had. Great in the living room, not so great in a bedroom.

The menus and TV guides took forever to change screens. It'd literally take 5 seconds to respond after pushing a button on the remote. This was on every Dish receiver I had, not just the DVR one. It doesn't sound like much but it was annoying as hell.

Oh the install was my favorite part. Their guys cut my phone line since it was round and they though it was coax, since I no longer had a phone they couldn't activate the systems. After about 4 hours of figuring how that it was their fault they "fixed" it with some butt connectors on an outside cable. After this the system worked great as long as the sun was out and the wind wasn't blowing. After 4 visits from a tech they finally figured out that on the initial install they left a connector loose at the LNB.

Oh yeah I forgot about that part. It's nice to be closing on your house and have a random $780 withdrawal for Dish equipment that you've already tried sending back for 2 weeks but were only sent one box for two receivers. It took a month to get the credit back, so of course in the mean time I had to borrow the additional money from my dad so I could cover closing costs.

oh their installers are idiots. When I had my dish 1000 installed to pick up HD channels, they came out 6 times. Either they forgot something, something wasnt on the work order, or didnt know what they were doing. Its a complete mess.

BTW if any of you dish subscribers have any problems at all. This is their resolution # they use for people about to file a complaint on BBB. These guys will approve anything! There at the end, instead of calling in to speak to some lady in India or the Philippines I would just call this # directly and they would iron shit out asap.

Man, sounds like you had some bad luck.

I've never had a problem with billing or with their website. My receivers will do their updates at like 3 AM. They are dead silent though. I've nevr had one make any noise whatsoever. I've never experienced the lag with button pressing in the guide either. In fact, that's what I hate about the DirecTV receivers I've used. I have a buddy who does my install work and he does it right. I don't trust the guys they send out.

I've been fairly happy with Dish Network but the PVR is a bit too cumbersome and they took the NFL network off their lowest programming packages.

The main reason I got DNet is so my wife can have her ONE Japanese channel for $25 a month. But last month she decided we didn't need it anymore. So I'm switching to DirecTV this summer so I can get NFL Sunday Ticket.

I've only had DirectTV since they came to the area in '96, I've never had any problems with their service. Actually one box took a shit and I had to buy another one, but when I switched to HD last year they gave me two HD converters, a new dish, installed everything including one of the older boxes upstairs. They appreciated my loyal business and I recieved everything for free!

Any idea what resolution dish is at best?

You sure about that? How many HD channels does dish network have? Fios has about 125 at the moment, and they're always adding more.

Dish HD channels are 1080i, I believe. They look amazing. Fios might be a little better, but the Dish HD channels don't leave me wanting an even better picture.

I'm pretty sure Dish has the most. They advertise that like crazy. I think they had 130+ a year or two ago, and they recently added a bunch more.

I don't think any dish company, or anyone that uses copper even broadcasts in 1080, they can just support it, just like how fios can support 1440 at the moment, but broadcasts in 1080. I could be wrong, but that's the way it's been explained to me.

It's definitely not broadcast in 1080p, but when I put it on hd channels my tv will show 1080i.

Everything on Dish Network is now in 3D. You can even jump into the show and become one of the characters. I boned Jennifer Aniston last night during a Friends rerun.

Dish currently has 140 HD channels and they broadcast in 1080i. My TV is an older 720P so it really doesn't matter to me. I chose Dish because they had better rates at the time and both have the channels I like to watch, so it really doesn't matter.

Why do they call it "Common Sense" when it is so rare?

I have had dish, fios, and uverse. I would pick dish as the best for me. Fios has no HD space on the DVR and you can't expand to external hard drive.

Yep, 80 hours SD, and 20 hours HD. You could always just not get a set top box, and buy a seperate tivo box if you really wanted to.

Yea but a 1tb hd is like $80. My old dish box did 30 hours of HD plus expandable hard drive. I don't like the fact that on fios it does not tell you episode numbers and the shit keeps recording reruns and not new episodes!! Taking up the small amount of space on my DVR!!

You can and I did, but the shit keeps recording reruns! The best part of fios is the free on demand.

My DirecTv DVR records only first runs of all the shows I have set with one exception, Wipeout (I can choose all or First run only). iI records the 2008 reruns once a week for some reason. Every other show tho, only first runs get recorded.

All the settings seem to work, I have some set to keep 3 or 5 episiodes, and it will remove the older ones if I do not delete them.

They've done studies you know.... 60% of the time, it works every time

Yeah, FiOS is what I currently have.

I've never had that problem, and we've had FiOS since FiOS first hit the market 5 years or so ago. I set it to record new episodes only, and that's exactly what it does. I also don't have any issues with the HD space. I've never even been over 50% used, then again once I watch it, I delete it. No need to keep it around.

For what it's worth, I have 122 HD channels. From everything I've seen online, FiOS and DirecTV lead the market in available HD programming. Dish wasn't even mentioned in the articles, meaning they are behind FiOS and DirecTV.

I'm pretty sure Dish doesn't lead in anything, except maybe trying to infringe on tivo's patents, they're pretty good at that.

If Dish offers 130+ hd channels, how come the GOLD TURBO HD lineup only claims 'over 70' hd channels? Kinda pathetic(unless you want to talk about charter with 39 or so hd channels) in my opinion. Even U-verse has almost 100 hd channels, and dish only has 'over 70'?

Would someone count these for me? lol, Couldn't find an exact # and direct tv doesn't make it easy on you....but according to this they have about 89 hd channels (they also have another 30+ reserved for sporting events, pay-per-view, etc).

Click on 'hd' after putting in your zip code/city, and you should see it pop up 122 hd channels on the count.

I've had DISH for the last 2 years. Excellent all around, especially their multi-room DVRs that dwarf the capacity of FIOS DVR(and more reliable). Lots of HD channels. The few times I've ever had to call customer service I never had a problem. At least not yet.

And DISH has been doing 1080P Pay Per View for quite some time, so I'm not sure why this is being considered something new?

No one currently offers more HD channels than Dish Network.

You have a misunderstanding of their packages. The TurboHD packages are offered for people who want nothing but HD channels, or as add-ons to the regular channel lineups. There are still other programming packages that offer channels in HD that are separate from the Turbo packages.

Just one example - MTV. It's not listed under those Turbo HD packages, but it is indeed in HD. There are several others.

Dish actually is advertising 140+ now. They even show DirecTV as having 130+.

I'm very happy with Dish. Their customer service sucks most of the time, but I've heard horror stories from friends who have Fios, too.
