hdmi audio to 8 ch analog

this unit caught my attention:
http://www.octavainc.com/HDMI%20swit..._7_1audio.html

an hdmi switch (4 inputs) which is nice, no big deal.

also an hdmi splitter (2 hdmi outs) which i wont use, but it's a nice feature that's fairly expensive.

most importantly ... hdmi audio TO analog 8 channel output. converts LPCM to 7.1 analog out. thats f-n nice for me!

i wonder what the quality is like.

Interesting! HDMI should have the bandwidth for 7.1, right? Some blurays support this though I wouldn't know cause I don't have that many speakers! lol

yea, hdmi can carry 8 channels of discrete uncompressed audio (LPCM) and the ps3 will output that up to 192 kHz. ( i think since i dont have my ps3 in front of me)

i kinda want this but i dont. ill wait, i want to see reviews on this thing.

Looks like they don't say anything about the 7.1 in/out ADC/DAC. That's a dealbreaker for me, honestly. If they don't brag about it I would assume it's not exceptional, and my Denon uses burr brown (yeah yeah, TI bought them years ago, I know) which is pretty darn good, and can accept the bitstream input and process it.

yea, that's my problem with it but at the same time i dont know if it needs DACs or if it does i dont know if it needs it in the same fashion as a since it doesn't convert bitstream signals. it only converts LPCM signals which is already uncompressed no decoding required. just extract the 8 channels traveling through hdmi into 8 channels over RCA.

i may call them and/or post on avsforum.com

well a quick search avs forums shows that they are 2 months ahead of me:

"The unit does have its own DAC. It uses the same BurrBrown DAC as the Panasonic BD55. It does not have much of a line stage though, basically from the DAC through a filter and then to the outputs. No buffer or op-amps so you would want to keep cables short and the load easy to drive."
