They were actually, but the downfall of the format (even though it isn't dead yet) was the lack of availability of cheap SACD players.

so now they're going to come out with some blu-cd format that is still 16/44.1? :Picard:

I would LOVE to see a new high res blu-ray format. Everyone and their mother will have a blu-ray player.

Really interesting that they're trying so hard to hold on to physical media. Sell everyone a BD-P and just let them DL the format to their PS3/BD-P.

Agreed. I can get anything I'd like at 44 hz. Give me a reason other than "less read errors" like 24 bit audio.

why the fuck would you need a CD, you do notice that everything that is coming out is on a hard drive, correct??? you must still have records and 8 tracks.

There are a lot of crap mp3 downloads and the like you can purchase, but why pay for something that sounds like garbage?

Optical media a dead-end street in the audio world.
FLAC or Lossless MP3 is the best quailty you'll get out of most recording studios these days, seeing as how they've dropped the quality of original recordings to just-above MP3 quality. Go to Youtube and search for "Loudness war", and you'll see what I mean.
Pioneer is working on a new optical media with a 400GB capacity, which would be great for data storage, but pointless for audio/video.
