Here's one for $150 + shipping or for your notebook for $80.

here's a review on the $150 one

My problem with this player (1st and only BR, so I have no other experience)

1. Very slow. Takes 20-30 seconds from power up just to be able to open the tray to pop in a DVD. Big pain when all you want to do is remove a DVD to return to Netflix.
2. Slow to load a DVD. 30 seconds to 2 minutes.
3. Dark Knight wouldn't even load at first. Had to hold power button and turn back on with DVD in for it to load.
4. Horton Hears a Who wouldn't play at all = said I needed an update for it to play

The biggest turn off is how long it takes to do anything.

Please tell me that more expensive and more recent versions of players are faster. That may give me some hope.

You don't really want the cheapest, but you can get a good one for under or around $300

They've done studies you know.... 60% of the time, it works every time

We've been happy with the PS3 except that when the fan kicks in it is pretty loud and we have to turn up the surround sound to overpower it.. Ours doesn't have the greatest ventilation though.

330 pages on prices... Seems to be amazon.com has had the best prices with lowest risk. I have have a PS3 for the living room, word on the street is that the PS3 will be dropping its price down to 299.99 in the next few months.
I have also been looking at this for the bedroom.
http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-BD-P15...6745639&sr=8-1 for less than 200 shipped.

Just trying to decide if I really need a blu ray for the bedroom

Just a replacement drive, should work with any. You would then need some decoding SW I think.

I expect that around christmas time they'll be down to $99. That's the magic price point for widespread adoption.

I've had a Magnavox NB500MG9 Blu-ray for close to a year now. I paid around $210. It was like $138 on Black Friday last year. It works great. It's a Profile 1.1 player and I haven't had any problems loading the newer Blu-ray releases. And it upconverts regular DVDs extremely well for it's price range. The only real drawbacks being that the player itself doesn't look very modern and some discs are slow to load.

Don't be afraid of those cheap Memorex, Slyvania, Philips, and Magnavox BD players. They are all made by Funai. And Funai does make high end products such as manufacturing BD players for Denon.

that's interesting, didn't know that. My player has had 2 firmware updates but they were both downloadable and easy to burn/install. Yes mine is slow to load, but once it's going, it's going.

Be careful with the lack of ventilation on the ps3. They tend to YLOD (yellow light of death) on people because of that and it fries the motherboard.

Yeah, I doubt it's bad enough to cause damage, it's just in a normal entertainment center, just not out in the open.

I would go with the PS3 as well. Its at the top of the range that you may want to spend, but it is well worth it long-term for several reasons:

- It's a gaming system as well

- The processor in it is an IBM processor that is the same as put in high end players that cost over $1K

- You can download firmware/software updates to the player as the Blu-Ray technology advances. This means you will always be able to play the newest versions of Blu-Ray rather than going to have to buy a new player in 2-3 years when the Technology advances

- Wireless connectivity that you can do a lot of stuff with

PS3 FTW, got mine 80gig for $249 shipped after the $150 I got back from Sony Card for buying from Amazon. It stays in my sons room so he can play games till time to watch a blu-ray. I have a power cord and HDMI cable tucked away in living room to plug it into.

I "think" my wife bought my SONY Blue Ray from Best buy for the mid $200's. Damn great machine with the upconvert feature that brings regular DVD's up to 1080p picture.

I cant remember the model number but its not slow at all.

I paid $212 for the Magnavox NB500MG9 approx. a year ago. And that was when it was a big deal for any BD player to be under $300. And now they are less than $100.

With prices like this I'm sure most of the manufacturers will stop making standard DVD and up-converting DVD players all together. Sony should thank WallyWorld and Funai for making Blu-ray obtainable to just about anyone. A kid selling lemonade on the neighborhood street corner can afford a Blu-ray player.

Build a small HTPC and install a $70 LG Blue Ray drive from www.newegg.com or opt for the $180 version that can also write blueray disks. Its still $400 in the end but you'll have internet, winamp streaming video/music and access to just about any movie you can download plus youtube video's. You'll also be able to play blue ray, dvd, hddvd, and photo cd's as well as run any compressed video from camera or memory card. Paying anothing over 150 just to play blueray is the market trying to bite the consumers.
