Media PC.......finally

Well, I finally built my media pc. It's been something that I've wanted to get done for a long time. I set it up to not only house all of my music and movies, but also to allow me to watch my favorite cable shows for free........until the bastards start charging online fees.

Here are the specs:

AMD Phenom X4 9550 Quad Core
2 TB internal - 300 GB external
ATI Radeon HD 3200
8 GB DDR2 Ram
Vista Home Premium (for Media Center)
DVD RW
Blu-Ray
5.1 Optical Out
HDMI Out
10 Mbs internet (currently clocking at 9872 Kbs)
Gyration wireless keyboard and multi-device RF remote mouse (it looks just like a TV remote with functions for PC, TV, Aux, Sat, but also controls the cursor)
46" Samsung 1080p Plasma

I plan to liquid cool it in the coming weeks and as an earlier thread mentioned, put it in an adjacent closet. And I left plenty of room for expansion which is good, because I'm filling it up quick with movies.

Attached is a photo of my dashboard and movie folder. All in all, I'm very pleased.

What kind of imputs does it allow? I need something to up convert all my imputs to an HDMI out for my projector. two components are HDMI, and two are component and RGA. Will yours run all of the imputs?

It has one HDMI input, 2 RCA inputs, and the usual array of USB's.

I wasn't too concerned with up converting or creating a single hub of inputs.....that's what my reciever is for.

Actually, that would work, I could ditch my DVD player. Cool deal!

I haven't on this computer. Right now, the 60 GB of music I have resides on a dedicated external drive. I shouldn't need to worry about compressing those files for some time.

That's pretty sweet. I've been wanting to build a HTPC for a while. The other day, I was looking at some HD Media Players. What do you guys think about them?

Pretty sure someone brought those up on here, or another board. But most everyone gave them a bad review. There is a thread or two about them over on www.avsforum.com if you want to research it more.

are you running vista 64bit? with 8gigs of ddr im guessing yes.

IMO you dont need to liquid cool. with a media pc, that processor shouldn't be sweating. i bet you can get a nice tower style heatsink and you wouldnt even need to run a fan on it just to make things whisper quiet.

i dont know that vid card, is it onboard?

Yeah, it's Vista 64.

As for the cooling, I agree. I had been considering liquid cooling but I just decided that it wasn't worth the effort.....for the reasons you stated. I'm building a custom tv stand to enclose all the audio equipment, center channel, and the pc and I'm going to install some fans inside the pc's cabinet.

As for the video card, yes....it is onboard. I've been really happy with it. It doesn't have any issues running whatever I throw at it, so far.

All in all, I'm getting the bang that I had hoped for out of this unit. It's been real smooth and simple. I did go ahead and download the mymovies software recommended above, but it's going to take some time to integrate it. I had already downloaded 75 movies in .avi which isn't supported by mymovies. So now I have to get a converter if I want to have the movies in media center. I'll get it done though.

Be thankful we're not getting all the government we're paying for.
