Netflix "Streaming" box

Wow! I've been reading about this for several months and now it's finally out.

Don't know how many of you Netflix people out there watch some of the movies online but I do and even have a Media Center computer hooked up to my living room TV so I can stream movies online from Netflix (as well as playing movies I've ripped and downloaded over the internet) using My Netflix.

This might be considered competition to the AppleTV but it's really not. It doesn't store movies like AppleTV does and (what I really like) if your a Netflix subscriber you don't pay for any movies you play, you get it free with your Netflix subscription. No idea what the quality of the streams will be but for $100 and no additional charges I'll buy one. The selection isn't great but there is still a lot to watch online (10K plus) and since I've dropped my subscription from 5 movies at a time to 3 I've been watching whatever I can online for free.

I think it's going to be limited to the limited online movies already available to watch on your PC, which if so, will suck. Besides that, no ETA on HD content. Basically, it might be nice for a kid or someone that watches anything but newer movies.

Yes it's limited to the "Instant" online movies they have but there is quite a bit out there. I've recently watched The Replacement Killers, Blade Runner Directors Cut and The 5'th Element (although I have that on DVD). Lot's of TV shows on there as well like Heroes, 30 Rock, and even some classic Miami Vice. For a $100 one time charge and nothing additional I'll bite.

Hmm, might have to check this out. We use Netflix and depending on the quality I'd get one for $100

I already have one of my PC's hooked up to my LCD HDTV and watch Netflix movies on it once in a while. I especially like using it to watch episodes of shows like Dexter, and The Office.

I think the Roku box is good for those who have Mac's or run linux and can't Stream Movies on their PC's. For $100 it's not bad, and they say that when Netflix upgrades to HD and 5.1 surround, you'll be able to upgrade your box via firmware.

Cool.

I watch Netflix streaming videos quite often. I definitely get my moneys worth out of Netflix.

http://dl.maximumpc.com/Archives/MPC0508-web.pdf start on page 12, but specifically what you care about is on page 24.

Take it for what it's worth, I like that magazine since I usually agree with their reviews and they have not let me down. HOWEVER, I did not fully agree with their XB360 review and that's the only device I have in that lineup.

I just wanted to add something to this thread before I forgot.

I've actually just been hooking up my laptop to my TV and watching streaming movies off Netflix for quite a while now. You don't have to buy anything other than having a VGA or SVideo cable and a 3.5mm mini plug to RCA adapter cable.

It's not 1080i high definition, but it looks pretty decent. About like Super VHS quality and you don't have to buy a $100 Netflix box.

Just plug in the VGA/S Video and mini plug adapter into the laptop and then hook them up to your TV. Function + F4 for external monitor out and you are watching streaming movies from Netflix. We use the TV's zoom feature to make it fill the screen and it looks fine. Good enough to watch a 2 hour movie. You can also hook up your RCA L+R into your a/v receiver and it will create Dolby Pro Logic II, which sounds pretty decent.

You just load the Netflix movie viewing software and you can stream all day without any kind of a box.
