03 GT speaker help

i have a 03 GT with the machMP3 head unit, but i dont have the mach460 speakers or amp. its the basic sound system(factory) then i put in the machMP3. anyways i had 2 12's and it sound good, but i took them out(would rather have less weight than excessive bass). now my system sounds like shit without the subs(no bass AT ALL). what speakers can i get that have good bass? i have a set of infinity kappas in the rear right now(and am not getting any bass out of them at all). i was thinking bout finding a speaker with good bass to put in the rears and move the infinitys to the front. any advise? or any way to make my infinity's sound good without running the subs again?

What do you have in the front? Put your BEST speakers up front.

You're not going to get a lot of bass without subs. In fact, you will miss out on some of your music altogether if you don't have a sub. I'd get a small one at least, just for the musicality, even if you don't want any real "bump". The best way to squeeze the most midbass from your door speakers with that stock head unit is to deaden the crap out of your doors. Dynamat Xtreme is good stuff. Take the panel off and put a layer on the inside and outside of every surface you can on the door itself. It should make a noticeable difference. Good luck.

im not sure on the fronts. when i bought the car it had focals in the rear, and its dynomatted(sp) from the rear quater panel back. not sure on the doors though (never pulled the panels on the doors). i just want a nice sounding factory type setup without all that weight from subs

I would expect Focals or Kappas to sound better than stock. There may be some other issue.

Depending on how the stock system is set up, you may have amps or built-in crossovers that are set up so that the door speakers don't get any bass. You would need to bypass all that crap, and maybe even get an aftermarket head unit. That will greatly improve the sound anyway.

I don't know anything about that head unit, but like I just said, it sounds like it could have built-in crossovers (probably that you can't access or adjust) that keeps your speakers from getting low frequencies. Pop in a decent head unit and see if that fixes things. If you still don't have bass, you are going to need a sub.

lol if your kapas and your focals sound like shit then somethings wrong with your HU. Take your car in and get it checked out.

heres the thing with the crossover theory jluv mentioned.
did you use a high level input from your rear speakers to you amp for your subs or does your head unit have an OUTPUT with RCAs for subs? If you went through your speakers, which you most likely did, then if there was a high crossover point on the stereo then the subs would sound like shit as well. It is also to my understanding (well, more an educated guess) that all the mach systems have all amps external and the stereo is just a dead head. if this is the case and you most likely used RCA inputs for you old subs, theres some fun shit you can do to bypass the amp.

as far as using focals and kapas w/o an aftermarket amp... thats just stupid. unless they were entry level focal coaxles (even then) you really HAVE to have a more powerful amp if you want any midbass from your door or rear speakers.

also if your system is set up correctly, you should barely hear your rear speakers. so putting your good speakers in the back is very very stupid.

its only prob 30 lbs for a single 10 in a sealed box with a small D class amp. you will Never get what you got from 2 12s w/o weighing almost the same. hope your willing to compromise...

You shouldn't expect to get anything below 80hz with those door speakers which is not nearly low enough w/o subs

They haven't invented invisible bass yet. 'Till then you'll need a subwoofer for bass.

Just run a single 10" and have the best of both worlds, weight reduction and sound.

it would help if you used a sub that didnt require a ton of airspace in a sealed box so you wouldnt have to use so much wood. you'd be surprised at how much MDF weighs.

You seem to think that 2 12's or nothing are your only options.. I decent 10 in a small box would be a good compromise.
