That sucks. My friend and I got a 5 gallon bucket at Home Depot and planted a 4x4 post in it with cement, then used a 2x4 to extend out over the edge of his balcony about 4 inches and hooked up a satelite dish. Worked great for the 2 years he lived there, and the apratments didn't tell him to take it down since it was not attached to anything of theirs.

Damnit, you added that AFTER I quote you! Yeah, free is better for sure.

If that's all there is, why is DirecTV touting that they have over 90 HD channels?

Problem with that is, the cable companies don't lose signal.

My parents as well as my in laws got sick and tired of losing signal every time the wind blew. Had techs come out several times. They couldn't fix the signal, so they both switched to FIOS.

I've NEVER lost signal with FIOS, period.

Like I said, at both houses, if it was a windy day, the signal went out. I've witnessed it myself. If it is raining? Forget watching tv. Snow, sleet? Same thing.

Sounds like you've had better luck, so good for you.

Ours has gone out maybe 3-4 times in a year and a half.. Not enough for me to worry. When it happens I just watch something on the DVR..

It went out the day it snowed, later in the evening, I went outside and squirted the dish with the water hose and it came right back

I've had good luck when I aim the dish myself. Forget the techs who do a "good enough" job.

Did they have a clear view of the southern sky? I've only lost signal twice.. Once when we had the snow, and once during a VERY heavy thunderstorm.

Woah Woah Woah!! Calm down killer!! I didn't say cable companies didn't recieve their signal from satalites. What i'm saying is that when i had satalite service a couple of years ago everytime it rained or blew wind really hard signal was lost. So if you read what i wrote, i asked is it any better now or has it changed since then? I've had cable since then and have only lost signal about 1-2 times out of 4 years.

That doesn't include the sports channels and PPV shit.

DIRECTV has the best national HD channels in the known universe
From DIRECTV 10 the most technologically sophisticated satellite we've ever launched to your home, DIRECTV now broadcasts over 90 of your favorite national channels in HD. Here is a sample of our expanded HD line up. And stay tuned. There's plenty more to come.

In addition to the channel logos included here, the total channel count includes fifteen HD Pay Per View channels, and eight HD DNS channels

And I hardly ever loose signal in rain, never have in wind, snow or sleet. I've had DirecTv for like 8 or 9 years. Plus the Sunday NFL Ticket rules!

Time Warner seems to be forever stuck in playing catch-up to other providers such as Dish Network, DirecTV, and Verizon FIOS. DirecTV has performed fine for me, with my only complaint being a minor one regarding their on demand service. Dish and Time Warner have their on demand service set up properly, in both number of selections and ease of use. DirecTV, with their semblance of an on demand service, does not.

my only problem with directv was their prices on their hd dvr units. it used to be $400. but now thats its $200 i will buy one when i get my projector. it works out fine cause dtv doesnt charge mulitple hd fees or multiple dvr fees. it will work to my advantage after a few months.

as far as weather, i remember 2 instances where storms interferred in my satellite reception. even when we iced over i didnt have a problem. dtv just seems to be on top of it for ppv sports packages and hd content. until thats no longer true, i have no complaints.

Yes they do but it's not affected by the weather nearly as much as satellite systems.

I've literally watched Direct TV while a tornado was touching down within 1/8 mile of my property (I did the install and dish setup), on the other hand with just a light rain my Dish system would go down. That turned out to be a loose connection at the LNB on install that took 4 repair visits to figure out.

If it's going down with light clouds or wind then it's an equipment problem. Monsoon style weather though will take a system out no matter how well it's setup.
