good deal on a 50" sammy plasma.

this was on the front page of slickdeals this morning.
http://shop4.outpost.com/product/5183896
http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=783251

samsung hpt5054 720p plasma tv. sure its not 1080p but i wasn't looking for that since i doubt it will ever get a 1080p source hooked up to it. its for my dad, he has been wanting me to keep an eye out for a tv for him.

i was about to go with a 42" panny plasma but this was just a better deal.

heads up in case anyone was interested.

Here it is for the same price if you don't want to wait for shipping:

I'm sure the Panasonic you were talking about was this one, right?:
http://shopping.dallasnews.com/ROP/A...vid=2519&type=

It's a nice TV for the price/size.

My buddy got the same one on Black Friday for $799. That is a decent deal, though.

Yep.. went to Fry's looking for the 5064 for $1299, saw the 5054 I had been looking for for only $1098.. It's $1499 at CC, etc..

Snagged it.. wife's been playing Guitar Hero III on it since I put it up this afternoon..

799?? damn! you sure it was a 50" for that price? if so i missed out.

oh hey grant, i had the option of doing in store pickup but they were sold out. it doesnt matter too much for me since i wont get a chance to go to my parents house till the weekend to mount it and set it up for them.

i cant see a panasonic on that link you posted but it was the TH42PX80U that i was looking at.
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Panas...oductDetail.do

overall i'm glad i was able to get a 50" plasma instead of the 42". seems most of the 720p 42" plasmas all have the problem of rectangular pixels (not cool!).

42" resolution: 1024 x 768 (4:3 ratio)
50" resolution: 1366 x 768 (16:9 ratio)

hell damn. i found this now:

http://shop3.outpost.com/product/5290327
maybe thats what you were linking to huh grant?

what would you pick? 42" 1080p panny vs 50" 720p sammy?

im leaning towards the 50" still b/c it's a pretty big room. the room will have a decent deal of light since my parents actually turn lights on (lights are overrated imo).

it will have an hd directv box and a dvd player. there will be no bluray or computer hooked up with no plans of adding those.

Yeah, it was the 1080p Panasonic - I linked it wrong, you can find it here:
http://shopping.dallasnews.com/ROP/A...20694545&type=

Or, you can go with a nice and newer 40" Samsung 1080p LCD with 3 hdmi's and etc, it's a pretty nice TV and 40"/42" is literally no difference to me. I would just go with the better pic, which I think the Samsung has.

By the way, these sales end tonight @ EOB.

I was mistaken. It was $897, not $799 on Black Friday. He still ended up at $1100 after tax, warranty, cables, etc.

Here you go, Momo - 40" Samsung 720P LCD for $899:

http://shopping.dallasnews.com/ROP/A...20730388&type=

Not a bad price and surprisingly it has pretty good stats. In the DMN ad, it mentions 2 different PLU numbers which come up on Fry's website as:

http://shop2.outpost.com/product/517...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

http://shop2.outpost.com/product/517...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG

The first link is a little better, but both are pretty good for the price point. They both have 3hdmi's which is nice. I would ask them for this PLU first 5178566 - If they're out of that one, the other is 5178656

so how many people buy the extended warranties when getting a new tv. I am on the fence about it myself.

I did since most of the flat panels are new technology.

depends on the tv, cost of said tv, and price of warranty. Some of these tvs are getting so cheap it's probably not worth it. Now, if it's a high end tv, I'm damn sure going to pay for the warranty.

i bought one on mine but when i bought mine it was retail price of 2499.99 so i figure i would try and protect myself.

i still have 3 years left on mine so i figure if something does happen to it, i am happy to accept an upgrade. im pretty sure something is going to happen to it.

i didnt buy one for my dads tv since its only a grand.

update on the parents setup

here was what they had before:

the old setup was a hitachi 43fdx10b hdtv on matching stand.
great american oaks entertainment center, 2 towers and bridge in beechwood finish.

my parents got all this stuff back in 01-02 when i was working at circuit city and it was good stuff back then but by todays standards it was junk.

the tv lost its convergence and ever since they remodeled the house (wood floors and new paint) this stuff looked too busy so they were ready for a change.

here is the new setup:

the new setup is the samsung hpt5054 50" 720p plasma
techcraft swp60 stand in cherry.

all the old audio stuff was mine. i took all that with me when i hooked their new stuff. to replace the missing audio presence i picked up an onkyo htsp904 htib from shoponko.com for a pretty good deal. its a decent receiver. the speakers look great and actually sound pretty nice. they dont want speaker cables running around anymore so their setup is only 3.1.

since im here at my parents house all day watching golf, here is my review of the tv.

first off i think it was a good price for a nice tv and no problems during shipping.

once it was delivered i hooked it up to the tune of HD theater all weekend because they say plasmas are most susceptible to burn in the the first 100 hours of use and i wanted to know if the tv was going to have any problems. everything checked out.

the unit looks aesthetically beautiful. i have to say plasma is nice. great deep and rich colors. very dark blacks. i noticed a lot of digital artifacts at first, a little time tuning it and no problems.

i dont see get any so called screen door effect but i do see a glare. its not horrible. overall a solid tv.

HD70 for under $500? Really? They don't have it listed on their website anymore. If you can find one, that would be a killer deal.

my gf found 1 out LA new in box but it was 650. instead of paying 650 +tax+shipping i got the mitsubishi hc1500 for 800 shipped no tax.
