What are the best amps these days?

I'm thinking about redoing my system in the stang. Also adding a small but good system to the wifes car and I'm not sure what is the best quality these days. I know 8-10 years ago PPI was pretty damn good or at least thats what I thought and I still have the PPI amp I bought 8-10 yrs ago powering my entire system.

I spoke with someone about 5 yrs ago and they told me that a good portion of the engineers that designed PPI went to work for JL so they had the corner on the market at that time.

So are JL's amps any good? If not what is? I don't mind spending some decent money but I dont want to break the bank either.

Thx

I've always been a fan of Kicker, I've had this 350.2 Kicker Amp going on 2 years now and it's been a beast. Great power, stays cool, and they are not that expensive.

JL makes damn good amps. I like the Slash series. Unlike most amps, they make their rated output (or more) with as little as 11.5 volts. Most amps are rated at 14.4 and put out significantly less when the voltage drops. They make it easier when selecting voice coil configurations as well. 2 ohm, 4 ohm, it doesn't matter. Again, the power output is the same. They have a ton of adjustable features, look great (I prefer the v1 black ones) and from my experience, they run hard without any issues. They are pretty damn expensive compared to most other amps, though.

I can't get into Kicker because their stuff is just ugly as sin.

I still use a really old PPI amp for my mids, and will until it gives up.

Those Alpine stackable amps are pretty sweet. Not sure if they still make them or if they've changed, or what.

Me and Justin have been friends since highschool. We actually met when I helped him rewire his first system in high school. We have always both had very nice stereo's in our car. Both of us recently have been discusssing new things and I pulled the triger and bought a new sub, and new headunit. I think I just lit the fire for him as well.

I let his wife listen to my car Saturday night and she was inlove. I am sure she really wants him to put some stuff in her car now. I think we have enough stuff between the both of us to set her car up pretty good.

I am going to buy a new set of components and I am going to be done with mine. Well maybe except for some Dynamatt.

This is like asking which engine is best, it depends on the application and budget. For the size/weight/power concerned I've had good luck with Audison but they are EXPENSIVE! JL stuff is good but I woulnd't say they are the best in all situations. For most people the cheaper Kenwood, Sony or Alpine stuff will work just fine.

Well he won't be buying anything cheap. He has an alpine 9815, mb quart componenets, jl w3 subs, and the ppi amp now. Prolly not baller level either.

Wink

All the new shit is basically well, shit.

If I was on a budget, I'd get the JL Slash amps, they sounds decent...

Little more money, and not much maybe 200-400 bucks for 2 amps, get the FOCAL amps... they sound a LOT better...

Lot more money, Audison. Best sounding amps I have ever heard, but the good ones are 4 figures each. I think 2500 for the ones I was looking at, and I need 2. So that's on the very much back burner.

Focals FTW though, I think they are like 800 bucks a pop for a nice 4 channel and a two channel... they have a cool no bullshit look too, not the look at me ricer look!

http://www.focal-america.com/
Go to power... I'd get the FP 4.75 and the 2.150, unless you have some huge subs, then get the Dual Monitor...

But I don't know much about stereos, so I wouldn't trust much that I have to say.

I like the rectangaled first art series that came out in the late 90's. I had a a6002 that rocked the hell outta 2 fosgate 15's.

Mid-90s, right?

I still run an art series A600 for my mids.

I had that, plus two A600.2 art series amps, and a PPI Sedona, but those amps were all stolen in October 2006.

Great amps, but over the last year or two they started crapping out and it would cost me an arm and a leg to get them repaired. But hey, they were 10+ years old, so...

The one I have left is still running strong. I'm gonna keep it until it takes a dump and then get a fourth Slash series amp.

I may be mistaken, but I think TMA runs those gray PPI amps in his setup. I have no idea which specific models, though. I also doubt he would be trying to get rid of any.

Actually me and Justin (2001GT) were talking about this yesterday. He was trying to get me to buy Todd's amp. I think they are out there and available.

I am not exactly sure. Justin told me but I can't remember. He said he is also selling the 3 12 box as well. I would talk to Justin or Todd on specifics on what is up for sale.

BJ, do you know if it is a 4 channel? I could care less, just trying to help a friend out by matching his current amp... I have way too many "stereos" and none of them are in cars, I don't need any amps/subs/components.
