ported or sealed

I'm not too educated on the car audio thing and was wondering why some people use a sealed box and some use a ported box. do they put out a different sound than the other? does the speaker(s) require a different amount of power depending what box it or they are in? does box size play a role at all??

anyway, just wondering.

Ported boxes typically play louder within a narrow frequency range than a conventional sealed box with the same power. Assuming you equalize the system properly and the port is designed well there will be no difference in sound other than it being louder.

You get out of the frequency range the box is tuned for though and the ported setup will sound terrible and given enough power and time it will destroy the woofer. Also if the port is designed poorly you'll get tons of noise from it.

Generally, I prefer ported enclosures but sell many more sealed for smaller size, less grief, and less chance that consumer units will nuke the woofers.

Ported needs to be done right. I always liked sealed in the past because I'd always had (and heard other) sealed enclosures that sounded good, while most of the ported stuff I'd heard didn't sound as good.

Then I bit the bullet and went ported. It hits okay and sounds pretty darn good. I get zero port noise, btw.
