Verizon Fios DVR

If I have an HD TV, and I don't care about multi-room capabilities or playing computer files, can you use the Standard Definition DVR and be able to record HD stuff? Or do you have to get the HD Home Media Set Top Box?

For the record, the satellite dvr beats the hell out of the fios dvr.

<---Not impressed at all with the fios version.

We had direct tv with one dvr and one basic box with no pay channels for $62 a month. Now we have fios with one dvr and one basic box for $56 with movie channels.

You give up the better dvr box with the fios to save a few bucks. It's not intolerable but after you get used to the better fast forward and user ease it takes adjustment. If satellite didn't go out with the weather we'd probably switch back and give up the free movie channels.

Fwiw.

Also, to actually answer the question you asked, the 'standard' fios unit is hd out of the box, as the wife has recorded many hd offerings and they are still hd when played.

Free movie channels? I know a guy who works at Verizon and even he admits their ordering system is fucked. You call in to place an order and they just go down their script and its such a PITA. And on top of that they're complete idiots. I have AT&T/SBC/whatever the fuck you want to call it now, but in the new house, they don't service the area so I'm having to go Verizon... just hoping the service/etc doesn't suck.

Showtime, skinemax, couple of the others like military, history, etc that others charge for. No hbo or any of the 'upper level' pay channels.

wow really? the few problems we had (ended up being our fault... shitty cordless phones) they helped us fix. fios internet is rediculously fast and reliable and decently priced. have had no problems with the phones. cable has never gone out... never... no problem with any of the quality either and we paid the extra $10 a month for the premium movie package and have tons more channels compared to a satelite for less money... i love verizon, dont really care what yall say

You can't record HD content on a standard definition box. Hell, you shouldn't be able to see HD content on a standard definition box.

Well I work for Verizon and if any one has any interest I can help ensure the order goes through or if you have issues try to help as I can. Please PM me tho.

Honestly the broadband service is the best and the TV quality is unparalled, it even looks better on non HD tvs.

i dont think verizon offers a non HD dvr. at least the guy told us they didnt... you have to upgrade to HD (additional 5 per box) and if you want you can add DVR to the HD (5 more ontop of HD

You're right. All Moto-DVR's which Verizon offer are inherently HD-Capable, it's just a matter of the billing codes in their system.

Guess ours is not standard definition, as when we check the 'remaining space available' it details how many of each we can record.

their website shows the have it but i would guess it's not a highly offered item. i think its just the hd dvr with the hd portion turned off.

yup. other than the black standard definition box, the silver motorola is all the same unit in different configs.

comcast had the same setup too. they offered dvr, hd, or hd dvr all out of the same box. some units did not have a hard drive included and if you wanted to add dvr service you would have to swap out with on that was programmed for it with a hard drive.

Yep.

All silver Moto-boxes that lack a hard drive are the regular HD boxes, no DVR capability.

All silver Moto-boxes WITH hard drives are DVR's, be it single or dual tuners.

All of the silver Motorola Verizon FIOS DVR's are HD capable. Only the black Motorola boxes do not feature DVR or HD capabilities.

I'm fairly pleased with the service thus far, except for the newly updated menu. It's buggy and takes more steps to accomplish the same thing. The Home Media is a nice feature that my wife uses all the time. Perhaps the coolest feature that I use is the Verizon Media Manager. It streams music or pictures from your PC to your set top box and it works pretty well. You just create a picture slide show or music list in the Media Manager software and you watch/listen to it on your TV/Home Theater.
