Home subwoofer question

I'm about to move into a new home, and have been putting together equipment for a media room. My main speakers (for media/movies and music) are Klipsch KG3's. I need a subwoofer (the last peice I need), and am hearing I should go with a Klipsch subwoofer also. Something about "phasing" and "timing". Does anyone really know?

I have a paradigm sub best sub I have ever purchased. I used to have a B&W sub and definitive technology. But, as far as your question any good sub will have a phasing level control knob. Not sure about what timing is. Look into a UltraCube 12 that's what I'm running I love it. If you live close you are more then welcome to come by and hear it.

I agree

I have a Paradigm 10" powered sub . I have had it for about five years , it kicks a** . Wouldnt trade it for anything but maybe a twelve inch .

I've got an HSU Research VTF-3 MK 2 sub.
It hits at 18hz and will vibrate the couch in our 16x20 room I was a little hesitant about buying it, but I've had a smile on my face ever since I plugged it in for the first time.

HSU Research has a MB-12 Mid bass module that I plan to add at a later date. The mid bass module will handle all frequency's between 50hz and 150hz(I'll probably run it from 50-80hz). This will ease the load on the sub, so it can focus on the lower hz stuff, and let the mid bass module handle the mid bass. Then the towers and surrounds will take the rest of the load.

I LOVE a lot of bass with my movies

I've got a Klipsch, I beleive its a 10" . It pounds the house and can be heard over 150 ft away outside. In a 20 x 20 room i haven't had to turn it to a 180 degree phasing. It's all about the timing if it's placed in a corner, far from the viewer. I'm not an expert, but this sub is right on the money.

Oh, and there is no reason to keep you sub the same brand as the rest of your speakers. This is true for monitors and center channel, but not for the sub. You have the freedom to choose whatever your heart desires

There are a lot of good quality products out there, and I would take my time in choosing yours. Paradigm, HSU Research and SVS are all food quality subs, and I don't see you going wrong with any of these. Just don't try and go the "cheap" route. If you're into movies, the sub(IMO) is one of the most important features of your system. But I'm a huge bass nut when it comes to movies. So deep, hard hitting bass is something that is important to me. When T-rex walks, I want the house to vibrate, as I'm sure this is what it would sound/feel like in real life.

Thanks for all the replies, guys. The KG3's have a "passive" subwoofer in the lower part of the cabinet, that handles mid-bass really well. I like the idea of concentrating on the really low (ground-shaking) bass. My room is 15'x 19' with acoustic insulation inside the walls and ceiling. Along with KG3's, I've got Polk Audio rearsand the top-end Cerwin-Vega center being pushed by a huge Onkyo (130 wpc). With the right sub, I should have no problem filling the room with sound, be it "Das boot", or the Black Crows...

SVS and HSU are great subs for the money. I can personally attest for the HSU STF-2 and say that it is MORE than enough for an average home theater system.

Yes sir we do! There is nothing like feeling the vibrations when T-rex is walking across the screen There's a lot more to having a good sub than just bass that you hear.

Yes, i will agree, Sunfire make one hell of a Subwoofer. We are sunfire dealers as well. And if you can afford them, then its hard to do any better. Of course some of our audio pro subs at $1700 arent considered cheap either, lol..... sunfire does make a hell of a inwall sub, with their anti-shake patent. On training, it was cool as hell, Bob put a small cup of bb's on the sub, and hamered away, and it based like hell, and was shaking the bb's to death, He turned on the anti-shake, the bass continued, but no bb rattle, pretty damn inpressive, but at $3500 it should be.

we are Thunder Audio in Carrollton. We just finished a 2 day install out in Plano today. Using audio pro, running 8.2 surround....Ok people dont get confused, 8.2= 2 fronts, 2 surrounds, 2 rear surrouns, 1 front center, 1 rear center, and 2 subwoofers.

Was over a $10K install, he paid under $4k, speakers alone should have been $5195, he bought part of liquidation, paid $1000, thats just an example... for those asking on the subs, i have very few left. As low as $350 right now for 400 watts subs, actually also have a few cantons left for $175. Feel free to pm me if you have questions.
