How does an RCA adapter work?

I know folks are running these in stangs to retain the stock Mach 460 system...

How do these work? Anyone have an article on a basic RCA adapter install?

I think you just splice it into the L/R speaker wires and plug yoru RCA's into the unit.

I did that when i had a stock HU in my silverado, but sound quality wasn't great and there was a "balance" issue.

this is my understanding of how it works...
the signal you get from the speakers is amped by your head unit so you need a line converter to reduce the strength of the signal so that you can plug it into your amp.

something like this should do it. http://www.crutchfield.com/S-7cVJqHE...&i=142SLC4#Tab

i can't really vouch for the sound quality but I'd assume that it won't be as good as using pre-outs but if you don't really have any other options then it is worth a shot.
