Surround Sound Receiver help

I have an Onkyo TX-sr505...
My problem with it is everytime there is a loud explosion or really whenever the volume has a quick jump in sound (imagine a quite scene in a scary movie and a zombie jumps out of nowhere) the receiver will shut off...

I hve my Xbox 360 and direct TV receiver hooked up to it using HDMI... 2 in 1 out to TV. It is HDMI PASS THROUGH only, so i use a fiber optic cable for audio... 2 cables, 1 from direct TV 1 from 360...
its not the HDMI b/c while watching 300 i hooked up the HDMI cable directly from my xbox360 to the tv and i still had the problem with my receiver shutting off... needless to say it shut off about every 10 seconds during the movie

shm short block, vortech s trim, 3.55's, AFM power pipe,etc..

That would get annoying!

If it's shutting off, then it's somewhere in the power supply(either from the wall, or maybe somethings loose inside the receiver). Either that, or something is drawing too much power from the receiver and it's shutting down to save itself.

I had to return that receiver, I was having HDMI handshake problems. I went to the SR605 and it was fixed. I'm not sure what the deal was, but Onkyo just told me to return it.

Sucks though, because it looked like it was going to be a nice piece for the price.

That could be too. I was under the impression that it had worked before.

I don't think that will "fix" your problem.

Constantly losing connection, via HDMI. I'd have to unplug and replug in the HDMI to work, it was on nearly all of my sources too, DVR - HD-A20, PS3, strangely enough, it never happened with my 360.

It also got EXTREMELY hot and I had it in a well ventilated area, same place the 605 is right now and it's hot, like it should be - but not really like it'll burn you, like the previous one was.

You got it with the HTIB, right?

Mine used to do the same thing. Turned out it was a combo of problems. Impedence load (house has multi-room speakers already installed, poorly, I had to disconnect some speakers, I had a 1/2 ohm load at the receiver) and phase matching (once again the wiring was screwy)
Not sure if this could be an issue for you but, might be worth checking.

home theatre in box? no i had some Sony speakers with a previous unit (match the tv color)
just got back from circuit city (where i bought it) and they said my speakers can't hold the watts from the receiver, since the sony speakers are from a HTIB. I just bought some Boston accoustic CR67 speakers (only center and two front for now). Well before I plugged them in I decided to put in 300 again and see if it would have the same problems as last night, and well lol is not shutting off!!!! So, basically the its working ok (for now) with the Sony speakers!!! damnit!!!

Sounds to me like its over-heating. Is it getting enough breathing room? If you have ANYTHING sitting on it or under it, remove it. Also, I would suggest using something as a spacer on the feet of the reciever to make it sit higher from the shelf. It also could be an impedance problem, but the Connections and what you have connected as input would and should have nothing to do with it so what you have hooked up to it shouldn't matter.

If you are going to get a "surge protector" get a power conditioner instead, it has surge protection as well as clean power. Monster is ok, but I would really suggest Panamax.

If you are using sony speakers from a HTiB, then thats probably whats causing it. From what I've noted, many Sony HTiBs is at 6 ohms. Most after market receivers are 8 ohm.

i hear you on the over heating but it is on an open shelf with plenty of space between it and the other electronics. So, it should get plenty of air flow. I bought a monster cable "monster power" surge protector
