What all is he wanting to upgrade? The speakers are just 6.5's in the doors and by the back seat right? To keep it at a real budget I'd look for some coax's that fit in the stock location. The Eclipse Point Source are nice, and there are some good deals on ebay on MB Quart's. Then just look for a 10" sub for some bass to round it out. To power everything one of the Sony 405EQX's. 40x4RMS + 100x1RMS plus it has a built in EQ. You can find that amp cheap on ebay also, seen them for ~$100. The Eclipse are $160 at Dynamic Audio in Garland.

Im not sure what your looking for but i had a friend who bought a JL Power Wedge with 2 12" W0's and a 250 watt acustic amp, and it hit like non other. I think the box w/ subs was like 350 (not sure) and the amp was around like 150.

Whatever he gets make sure its one of the component set ups so he doesnt loose and low range when ever he changes his highs.

Guess I should have asked him what exactly he's looking to get out of an upgraded system. For all I know he just wants to throw in a pair of 12's and an amp.

$500 is a weak budget. The biggest improvement he could make would be adding bass IMO.
Alpine T130 $129
PAC SNI15 $20
10 Ga amp wire kit $29
JL Audio CS110RW0 $168
JL Grille $20
Labor $90
Total W/tax $493.62
