Different iPod question...

OK.. I removed the radio from my car a long time ago. The wife and I are thinking about getting an iPod and a kit for her car. The question I have is... can I somehow hook an iPod to my car without a headunit?

Have you got an amp?
Might be able to connect it directly to the amp.
Just a thought.....

They make FM tuners for your iPod. They're like $80-100 depending on which brand you go with. But they plug in to your lighter outlet and pick up FM radio frequencies. The sound quality is not bad either, actually it's pretty decent.

What would a FM tuner do for me without a head unit? Does the fm tuner plug into the amp? I do not really need/want radio stations, just the music on the iPod.

Sorry, I could've been more detailed. The FM tuner uses an FM radio frequency so that you can play the music on your iPod on your car speakers. The tuner plugs in to the cigarette lighter in your car. I didn't at first realize you had no head unit. But if you want to get a head unit that can support an iPod, they're out there. If you don't want to spend the money to get a head unit like that, the FM tuner is a suitable substitute.

I think what you're talking about is an FM modulator. This is a device that plugs into your IPOD and transmits the signal to the head unit through an FM frequency. It's not a tuner. It doesn't bring in radio signals. It doesn't eliminate the need for, or even work without a head unit.

I'm pretty sure the answer is no. You are not going to be able to play the IPOD (or anything else) through your car speakers without some kind of head unit.

Of course you can. Just get the right cable and plug it into the amps input. Without and amplifier you'll be getting less than 1/2 a watt of power, not enough to hear much more than static. A better method would be to use an Audio Control 4.1 and plug the ipod into it, lots more signal to the amp and it's grounded with the cars electrical system. Without some way to ground the signal path you'll probably have some pretty serious alternator noise and random pops.

<-- used a walkman for a radio through most of high school, ghetto but atleast it didn't get stolen Just plugged the headphone jack directly into my EQ's input side.

LOL. By the time he buys a line driver just to use his IPOD, or even buys wiring for an amp, he could have bought a cheap head unit for less and saved time and energy to boot.

Headphones would be much less ghetto.

Yeah but it's not that he doesn't want a radio, it's those pesky gauges in the way.

Alpine 4313 volume control $60, 1/8" stereo jack to RCA $9, RCA from volume to amp $6. Done. Worst case if iPod does not have enough signal, you can add a line driver for $40.

You must have an amp and speakers for the above to work.
In classic cars where people do not want to cut the dash or replace the radio, we have used the XM Commander as a head unit and Alpine volume knob for control through amps.

I agree there, I would just go buy a really good pair of Headphones; ones that block out that horrible engine noise

That is EXACTLY what I was asking about. The door speakers and amps are still in the car. I might see if they would work with what you are talking about.
