I have always liked kenwood, but I also like alpine, and their new stuff is better than the older stuff. The more you are spending breaks the two up, the alpine gets dramaticly better in the higher end equip.

Alpine. I like the feature/dollar ratio of the Kenwood better but for overall reliability and sound quality, /////ALPINE.

I've had Alpine & Clarion & Pioneer in the past. Liked Alpine and Clarion really well.

Speaking of... I've just about figured out what I'm doin for the system I want to build. The only real thing left to decide on is the head unit. What are some of the good CD head units out there now? Only thing that is a must is 4V pre outs and I wanna keep cost around $300 or less for the unit. I've done research on Alpine already and have narrowed it down the the 9831. What else (other brands) out there is good right now?

I personally like eclipse for SQ, durability and overall quality, but they lack some features that Alpine picks up the slack with, such as the iPod adapter.

Eclipse rocks.

I don't care about the iPod crap. I don't even really burn my own CDs, although having MP3 cabability would be a plus. Oh, and it has to have a wireless remote - which most do these days. And then the "oh"s keep coming. Oh, and it has to have XM capabilities...but I think most of today's units can be wired for that.

i've got a pioneer, and wish i would have gotten the Alpine. Alpine is at the top of that list, and in my opinion, with pioneer right behind it and kenwood right behind that. Never had a Clarion...

No but Rockford does. We had to send them ALL back for defects of one kind or another.
