4.6 Cobra
Procharger Dyno Results and first
impressions
I was lucky enough to get hold of
Mike who recently installed one of the ATI Procharger Kit's on his DOHC Cobra. ATI
recently got into the DOHC Blower Wars that Vortech has been winning since it introduced
it's kit several years back. Powerdyne also has a kit but I have not heard of any dyno
results with it.
For those of you unfamiliar with the Procharger kit, it is an Intercooled Supercharger that promises high levels of boost with no detonation. Released in December of 1998, this is the first serious competition for Vortech who has had a kit for the DOHC Cobra's for over a year now. When looking at the dyno numbers, please take note that the full advantage of the supercharger can not be realized because there is not enough air moving through the intercooler like it woh the intercooler like it would be on the highway or track.
More
information about the installation of the ATI Procharger on Mike's car can be found
on the Modular Mustang's Web Site http://www.modular4v.com/ati.htm
Well here's the results... and we only found an extra 10hp when all was said and done ;-(
Lets start with baseline before the ProCharger (X-pipe and K&N.... and run on a
different dyno)
Date: 12/7/98 - Best run out of 3
254.3hp 262.5tq
After ProCharger Stage 1 (6lb) install
Date: 1/31/99 - All 7 Runs
Run 1 - 382.2hp* (with the 20 minute Vortech 10lb calibration to get the car running @
APEX ion to get the car running @
APEX - start tweaking AFR - rich from 3600-6250)
Run 2 - 381.9hp* (still tweaking AFR - rich @ 4k and @5400-6200)
Run 3 - 381.6hp* (still tweaking AFR - rich @5400-6200)
Run 4 - 378.2hp* (still tweaking AFR - little rich @5500-6200)
Run 5 - 380.2hp* (little tweak to AFR, bump timing +2 degrees - motor didn't like the +2
degrees)
Run 6 - 384.5hp & 336.9tq @ 7.8lbs of boost (AFR is a little on lean side, timing
backed down 2 degrees)
Run 7 - 391.6hp & 344.6tq @ 7.5lbs of boost (AFR is right on the money, timing was
were we started... I think -6 degrees up top)
* I don't have torque specs for these runs with me, I only have the RWHP and AFR curves on these runs.
Other info: Exxons finest 92 octane, car had approx 10 minutes of cool downbefore each run. Car was warmed (idled and held at 2k in 4th gear for 3 minutes prior to each run (Byron & Keith say this needs to be done to be sure the car gets out of closed loop (or is that open loop) warm-up mode otherwise it will pull timing), squirrel cage blower on the intercooler, fan on the x-pipe (cats) O2 sensor connected on the drivers side of the x-pipe. Boost was data logged between 7.1 to 7.8 lbs for all runs. Temp gauge got up to the 'MA' during the 5 run. Turned on the A/C on the 3 minute warmup to bring the temp back down to 'OR' - where it has been typically running on the street (A/C was turne street (A/C was turned off prior to dyno sample). Temparature was between 55° - 60° F during the tune.
I have complete dyno graphs of the last 2 runs available. I can scan in at work tomorrow if any of you want them (send me an e-mail). So I'm happy with the performance of the kit. Now we'll see how much abuse it can take ;-)
Here are some pictures of the engine compartment.
Other plugs....APEX (Bill, Vince, Mark) install is clean with no major problems (can't wait to get the gauges and brakes done) Highly recommended, Byron@racesystems.com in combination with Keith Paulsen (www.superiordynoservice.com).... you really can't do this S^$T by mail order ;-) Highly recommended. All these guys have been great to deal with and I have no reservation recommending any of their services (except forir services (except for cooking) to anyone. To all those boys out there with out of the box calibrations for your s/c...get to a dyno with AFR capabilities and a good Chipmaster tuner. Now if we only can get all these guys together... Maybe sometime in March ;-) Maybe a APEX Dyno tune day?? Maybe??
Feel free to ask anything I haven't covered.
