Anyone here like hot rod inline 6 cylinders ?

This engine was a collaboration between my dad and his cousin. It's a 292, bored .030 over. It's been balanced. It's got JE forged pistons that puts the compression at about 10.5:1. It has an Engle cam with 231 @ .050 duration and .565 lift. The head is a lump port head by Glen and Kevin Self with Ferrea 1.94/1.6 valves, K-Motion springs, Bill Smith pushrods, and Harland Sharp 1.75 roller rockers. The oil pan is a polished Hamburger aluminum pan, and the timing cover is a Frank pattern finned aluminum unit, and it has a custom made ATI Super Dampner and aluminum Fidenza flywheel. The intake manifold is a Clifford 4 barrel, with a 2" Super Sucker spacer and currently there is a Holley 750 carb on it that will probably get replaced with a Predator. This is going in a Diamond T pickup with a Richmond 5 speed behind it. It's estimated to make around 450hp and 500ft lbs.

Haha, this is just a little different than the Cummins 6 cylinders !

The headers are 180* for dirt track cars.

It will probably end up getting something like this built for it.

That's another 6 cylinder my dad's cousin built. It's a screamer too !!

Thats kickass. What is the point of those pushrod covers anyway? Other than leak oil, are they used to set the lash or anything? I had a 250 I6 in my first car and one of the covers always leaked.

Huge fan, saw your post on the Hamb. Very cool.

I once posted up on here about throwing a 292 in a hot rod and got flamed for it pretty bad. I think they're cool as shit.

One of my friends is building a 34 GMC truck rat rod with a pontiac flat head straight six. One of 4 made that year. He has spent a pretty penny to get it running. But it's only making 250 hp.

Does anyone make a composite intake for I6's? With the intake sitting right above the headers I bet it would pick up some nice HP from not soaking up heat.

Summit or Jegs used to carry a phenolic spacer for the ford "small-sixes" that looked like it would help. Honestly, though, Aussie crossflow heads are the way to go. They eliminate a lot of headaches, and flow like a sumbitch. They're also not as unobtainable as people think they are.

Also, I think CJ posted a thread a while back about building two extra cylinders onto an SBC head for a 292 build, thus satisfying a need for crossflow. It was pretty badass, IIRC.

My current I6 makes as much power as my old V8 SN95 stang woulda made after a PI H/C/I swap. I am actually still considering the TT 335i over the 8 cylinder /m3.

I could care less about "handling," and totally agree. I opted out of the sport package on mine because I wanted to be comfortable, which makes me think that the 335i is a better choice.

My main gripe about the "n/a" inline 6 is torque ironically. Put your foot in it and wait, wich is something that a diesel motor, turbo or not, doesn't havet to worry about.

The main difference is smoothness from what I've seen. All pistons are exerting power in a single direction.

Exactly why I wanna build a big block. 400hp is very different N/A versus a turbo 6.

Yes sir ! My dad is a retired tool and die maker. He has a Bridgeport mill and an 18x60 lathe at the shop, so whenever he needs something, he just goes over and makes it. LOL ! And he loves to engine turn EVERYTHING !

I'll post up pictures when it starts coming together, but there won't be any fenders involved in this build.

It's not necessarily the orientation of the power cylinder as much as it is the design of the crankshaft. (cause/effect, I know)

With 6 throws you can have the front three mirror the rear three (1/6, 2/5, 3/4)*which provides some inertial offset to counteract rocking (primary balance, first harmonic)... which also lets you align the throws in 120 degree increments so any variance in piston speed at any given time is negated / cancelled (secondary balance, secondary harmonic).
