Powder Coating prep work?

I have a few things that I'm looking to get powder coated here in the next few months when the extra cash allows it. Right now my budget is tight so I wanted to see if there's anything that can be done to prep something such as a set of rims or a bike frame that i'm wanting powder coated to cut down on the cost of the coating. Or is the prep work already figured into a quote/price?
