toilet refills every so often?

my toilet will refill when its not even being flushed, does through out the day and night.
is it the float or the seal between the tank and the bowl.
never had this issue before

its more than likely the seal of the flapper... you might not hear it but its probably slowly draining and the tank refills itself when the float sinks low enough

Check and see if you see a slow water leak in the bowl.. You might need to go ahead and replace the tank/bowl fastener so the new flapper seals better. If you go that far...you might as replace all the inners of the toilet..its only a couple bucks more. I think last time I did that it cost me a whopping $20 when the flapper and pipe was like $15

Yes Sir, Just did this to both toilets at my parents house, buy all the parts and do it all at once.

make sure that the cord between the flapper and the flush handle is not too short it may be holding the flapper from making a good seal

both our toilets just started doing this at the same time. It makes me wonder if its something else causing it because how could both toilets go bad at the same time. Our house is 3 years old and the toilets are those new Kohler class 5 flushing systems, so i dont even know if it has the same parts as old school toilets. Anybody know what else could cause this? When the toilets do randomly fill for a few seconds, i hear something going on with the pipes near the water heater.

Could it be some sediment in the lines?Little bit of dirt /trash/slime under that flapper may let water pass. I'd replace the inner parts first.

easiet way i have found to test is to flush the toilet, then when it cuts off put a couple drops of food coloring in the back of the toilet (upper deck). if the water in the bowl turns red then you have a leak and need to replace the $3 flapper
