Moving into new home, any suggestions?

Well my home is nearing completion. I should be closing on it the first week in January.

Before I even start moving in any furniture, the G/F and I are going to paint a few walls and seal the garage floor and seal the grout between the tiles.

Does any one have any suggestions or tips for a first time home owner? i plan on installing 2 rows of Fluorescent lights in the garage. I've also seen one guy install them on the running boards so you have light while underneath the vehicle.

Sounds like a smart plan to do your painting and stuff before the house is filled with funiture. I would say take a walk through the house and nit pick everything.

When I bought my first home I didn't notice a lot of real little things on my final walk through that really bug me now. Just little stuff like light switches that are crooked and outlet covers that aren't tight against the wall. Look out for little stuff like that.

I don't know if you have an atic over your garage or not, but I layed down some plywood over my garage and created a ton of extra storage space. I would definitely say put the lights in first though.

I'm going to do that in the near future but will have to pull up one of my pieces of ply-wood to get to the light that I want to conect the new lights too.

Just plan the things you want to do and don't get in a rush to move in.

There were a few things I wanted to do before we moved in, but our house was delayed so many times, once it was ready, I just wanted to get into it.

You're on the right track. Do as many projects as you can before moving in, especially things like painting, extra lighting, get the garage the way you want it(lighting, floors, walls, extra electrical outlets), lay floors in the attic, drop any surround sound wiring, electrical drops, exterior flood lighting, window treatments. The more you can get done in an empty house, the easier it will be.

Ditto on what everyone else is saying. Get all the work you can do before you move in. It makes things a lot simpler.

Compare everything to the quality that sold you in the model home or simply what you think should be right. If it's not right NEVER close until it's fixed.

On those garage lights...use the T1 bulbs, and you won't be dissappointed.

Por que? I have to replace the ballasts and bulbs in my garage lights. What's so special about the T-1 over the other options?

Totally different bulb, but you need new electronic ballasts (new fixtures). I can literally detail or do any work on my car in the garage. It gives a "truer" light...like a modern paintbooth.

Me neither - would like to see those. On another note, I would expoxy coat that garage floor. To do it after you move in means emptying the garage and leaving it bare for 24-48 hours. Best to get er' done before you move in.

Epoxy garage floor coatings rock! Spills just wipe up and dont soak in and stain. Things are easier to find if you drop something small. I have done several and all have bonded well with no peeling issues. I prefer the more expensive oil based epoxy products but the water based stuff works pretty well too.

Get a pest control company on contract and have them treat the house before you move in. That way any silverfish or roaches you may happen to move in with you will go away. Stay with the treatment program. We did this when we moved in and all of my neighbors have had termites and carpenter ants, except us
