What is the difference between a C4 / C6 / AOD....

What were the original vehicles the 3 came in?

Obviously the AOD is newer.

I hear the C4 and C6 make good racing trannies, but do they have disadvantages?

I don't know anything about automatics. But I want to learn. Please bestow a little knowledge...

C4s went behind early small blocks (70s-80s). The C6 was the big block and truck tranny. The C4 and C6 are three speed trannys with no overdrive and now lock up torque converter. The C6 is a big beefy transmission and can take a lot of abuse but since it is big and beefy, it has a lot of heavy parts inside of it and that puts it at somewhat of a disadvantage for use as a drag race transmission. You usually have to beat the trans tunnel to get a C6 to fit in a Fox Mustang (Al P has one in is 408 Mustang). The C4 is what lots of people use in Mustangs for drag racing. Relatively inexpensive and can be built durable. The Chevy Power Glide transmission is probably the most popular racing transmission. It's a 2-speed transmission that can be built to be almost bullet proof behind extreme horsepower engines. It's popular becuase it's very efficient (very little parasitic drag) and light and only has two speeds. Less shifting in drag racing means quicker ETs.

So is it true that C4's don't do well on the street for daily driving....?

Can you stick a Powerglide behind a Ford motor?

Well w/a C4 you have no OD. So if you plan on getting on the highway, your mpg is gonna suck major ass.

unless you've got a turbocharged setup with tall gears and a relatively low stall!

a C4 works just fine for daily driving... certainly better than a 'glide! (2 speed!)

but the "wilder" your combo (deeper gears and higher powerband) the less "drivable" it will be...

it'll be a shitload more consistant and will be quicker in a straight line than a stick, and if you've got a good turbo combo, it's PERFECT, but for a peaky combo that's going to be driven on the street? give me a stick...

If you're willing to spent the money, you can have a C4 with OD. Its a modified version of the Laycock de Normanville overdrives found on older British cars. There was a link floating around here somewhere... I'll have to dig it up.

Although I think for the price of an overdrive-equipped C4, you could have a decent AOD.

You CAN build a good AOD for all purpose use...like me.

Costs a bunch but if you use AODE guts and run a 3.73 with it, it is like having 4.30's in a regular gutted AOD.

Yes, Ford made a C-5, they where put in Lincolns and shit like that if I am not mistaken, but they were/are real rare. I run a rollerized C-6 in my '90 Coupe and it fit with out beating anything, but lontubes are a totally different story (can you say "Full Custom Headers/H-pipe") If I had it all to do again in a fox bodied car I would deffinately go with the C-4

C5's aren't rare... they're a C4 with a locked 3rd gear... they use many of the same parts inside... one trick for building your C4 is to use a C5 forward drum as it holds an extra clutch...

I wouldn't spend a dime on an AOD... and AODE is a different story, but I'm so poor, I still wouldn't be ABLE to if I wanted to.
