Racin Jason

I got the below crash picture this morning from a friend....it's the first I've ever seen, and had always heard that no pics ever surfaced on the net.

I know a lot of guys out here remember Racin Jason....but for those who don't, he was one of the first "big-boys" of fast fox bodies. I don't have a picture handy, but his first car was a big-tire GT Vert with a Duttweiler built twin-turbo small block. That car went into the high 7's back in the early/mid 90's....VERY fast for it's day. Hell, that's fast by today's standards.

Jason eventually built this coupe, with the intention of running a 10.5 tire....31x10.5, but 10.5 nonetheless. The coupe was a full-bodied, full interior car...obviously tubbed, though. It had a large skinny block in it, with a single turbo...was running in the 8's. Jason was in with Mickey Thompson, who gave him a set of the (then new proto-type) 33x10.5's for some testing on his car.

This was the car before-hand.....

As I understand, the car was tested on several 60' passes with the 33" tires, and even made some half-track runs. However, once Jason decided to do a full 1/4 run, tragedy struck! The 33's diameter swelled on the big end of the track, making contact with some part of the car....which obviously shredded a tire...flipped the car, and hit the pole supporting the scoreboard. As I understand, it hit perfectly on the A-pillar right as the car was rolling onto it's side (but fully in the air)...right about where your inspection sticker would be.

This was the result....

Sadly, and as you might imagine....Jason was killed instantly in the crash. Reports later surfaced that his helmet was found several hundred feet from the wreckage....his head was still in the helmet.

Pretty sure the pic you posted of wreckage was from a race in Mississippi or Alabama from like a week or 2 ago not Racin Jason's wreck. Unfortunately this wreck also resulted in a fatality.

Interesting that the picture is from a newer wreck that happened within the last 2 weeks and if you notice in the pic the motor is in the lower left of the wreckage with a long tube header attached. In short that is not a pic from Racin Jason's fatal accident.

I don't know if I remember correctly or not but I thought that Jason was in his white vert when the accident happen but I could be wrong.

Your right, I knew Jason was the owner that white twin vert.

BETWARDA, JASON E. - "Racin" Jason Betwarda, of Scarsdale, lost his life doing something that he enjoyed the most, in a tragic accident in June 12, 1999 at the Lebanon Valley Dragway (outside of Albany), while testing his red single turbo 10.5 inch tire "93" LX Coupe. He was preparing for a race at the Maple Grove Race Track in Pennsylvania next week. Jason was one of the founders of the 5.0 movement driving his twin-turbo convertible Mustang to outrageous elapsed times and fans knew that he owned the fastest Mustang on the planet. Memberships include the N.H.R.A, and the N.S.C.A. and the Hot Rod Association. Born in Yonkers on August 19, 1970, Jason was the beloved son of Jack and Jo Anne (Forcelli) Betwarda. He attended Yonkers schools, Iona Prep and attended Pace University for two years. Mr. Betwarda held the position of Vice-President for two family controlled companies in Paterson, NJ, the Wards Ice Cream Company and the Ameriseru Corporation. Survivors include his loving fiance, Anna Roldan and stepdaughter, Janice; and grandmothers Margaret Forcelli and Marie Betwarda. He is also the fond nephew of Peter and Anthony Forcelli; Bill Betwarda; Irene Mallon; Maryanne Falcone and Patricia Profeta. In addition, he is survived by many cousins. His two grandfathers, Peter Forcelli, Sr, and Emmanuel Betwarda, died earlier. Friends may call at the Sinatra Memorial Home on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at Our Lady of Fatima Church at 10 am followed by entombment at Ferncliff Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Saint Judeës Childrenës Hospital preferred. "THE SINATRA FAMILY OF FUNERAL HOMES" SINATRA MEMORIAL HOME 601 Yonkers Avenue, Yonkers (914)963-5263

You are thinking of Steve Grebeck.

copy/paste...it was in the red coupe

Jason Betwarda, a resident of Scarsdale, New York, was killed when his turbocharged 1993 Ford Mustang dragster hit a concrete wall and went into a series of rolls. Edward Cicoria, 47, of Pine Bush, New York, received minor injuries from flying debris.

Steve Grebeck, who was the world's fastest Pro 5.0 Mustang driver at 6.65 secs and 213+ mph, was involved in a high speed collision with Bill Rimmer Jr.'s Pro 5.0 car during round one of eliminations. Grebeck's Precision Turbo Ford Mustang jumped to a lead in the right lane before drifting towards the guard-rail. Grebeck then lost control, shooting across the track in front of Rimmer's Mustang, which struck Grebeck's car in the driver's door as it started to roll. The hit launched Grebeck's vehicle over the guard-rail, and the Mustang flipped several times and caught fire. Emergency personnel rushed to the scene of the accident but it was soon apparent that Steve had expired due to massive injuries. Opponent Bill Rimmer was transported to hospital with only minor injuries.

Well, the wreckage picture was from an unconfirmed source....like I said, I wasn't sure myself...it was sent to me just this morning. Maybe it isn't Jason's car, which would mean that there still are no pics of that wreck out there.

However, I no FOR SURE that he died in the red coupe....I know someone close to his inner circle. His family finally sold the white convertible as a roller about 2-3 years ago....it was on Ebay. I know that for sure...I watched the auction. Here's his obit that confirms it too...http://www.nyjnews.com/obituary/obit.php3?id=23285

I also know for sure that he was decapitated in the wreck...not a chest injury.

BTW - I know a guy that is friends with Ragusa...he always drove the white vert, or at least once it became serious.

Nevertheless, Mike was actually right behind Jason in the staging lanes when the crash happened....he was about to make a pass in the vert.

Looking for some more stuff on the net, I found this good wheel-stand video...

Some dipshit trying to steal the name "Racin Jason". Seems that might make for some bad karma.

Okay lets get this right. Jason didn't die in white vert or his red mustang either. it was a black 1988 0r 1989 supercharge mustang. he made two runs that day and both of them were in front of my brother who was driving a blue 1980 mustang. Jason made a pass down the quarter mile with a 8:65 @ 165mph in round one. he didn't make a run in round two. round three he was in front of my brother and he hit the wall going through the traps. "the roll ball broke and cut his head off" said the track officials and they closed down the track for the day. we got the hole day on video tape besides the run when he hit the wall because me and my dad were with my brother in the staging lanes. this was on June 12th 1999
