Hunters, what rifle do you shoot? What do you hunt and why?

I myself use a 270 Mossberg 100ATR. It's nothing special but it gets the job done, and the some.

http://www.impactguns.com/store/015813260305.html

I'm not into bird hunting or anything other than big game so I only have the 270 and a Winchester 1300 semi auto 12ga.

Reason I also own the 12 ga. is that being from Michigan you are not able to use a rifle in the lower part of MI only in the UP are you able to legally.

Bear, white tale, hog, elk, moose and the occasional bob cat. Thats about all I hunt.

I hunt to fill my freezer and feed the kiddo's. This year has been good. Need a few more hogs to mix with the deer for the burger.

Just curious about the rest of the hunters on here. If you don't hunt and don't like hunters no need to comment. As I stated I don't hunt to kill shit for fun I do it to feed my family.

Well I am only a bird hunter right now, so I use a 12 gauge, side by side for dove, and old 870 for waterfowl. And I eat everything I kill.

Last time I went hunting I used my 45/70 guide gun. It was in thick brush and I wanted something small. I also have a scoped .308 for stuff further out. I dont really hunt much anymore. It costs too much unless you have some land. I have more fun with my 10/22.

Browning BAR .30-06 for Whitetail deer and hogs. Remington 12ga 1187 for Turkey. I haven't been able to afford it for a few years now but, as soon as I can I will be back out there so I can get my kids involved in the outdoors.

For turkey I'll use any kind of long gun from 22 to 12ga. The lighter the better.

Henry lever action 22 LR for squirrel.

Compound slingshot with .25 caliber BB for rabbit.

30 M1 carbine for most all fur-bearers except rabbit and squirrel.

454 casull, 445 Supermag, 45 Win mag for hogs and poacher's pickups

I hunt with either a Mossberg Ulti-Mag or my Mossy 500a both in 12 ga. I use those to hunt dove, quail and duck. As far as deer or hogs, i use my Marlin 300a 30-30, its dead on at 200 yards using Revolutin rounds. unfortunately did not see deer or hog this year. Not sure why. I have not had the chance to eat my duck yet so i donate the meat to a buddy who does. but the dove and quail I will eat all day long.

Unless you have a lot of land, its very expensive to hunt big game in Texas. Public land is good for mostly small game. We should get all the DFWstangs members together and do a group hog hunt. I use a .308 Savage as my hunting rifle and a Fabarm/H&K 12 gauge for bird hunting.

I'm down with that!

I use a .270 Savage like this: http://www.savagearms.com/111f.htm
and i use a Simmons scope.

I'm into big game like deer and hog. In fact, i went hog hunting last weekend and nailed a 150lb boar from 50-60 yards.

The reason i do it is to fill the freezer and the damn adrenaline rush i get when i see a critter. I have to think about keeping my breath under control when i look through the scope. I take careful shots and ALWAYS ensure i see the entire animal before i shoot. I know some crazy folks around here shoot at bush movement and a wee bit of brown...

I almost nailed a feral bull one time, LOL! Damn thing was trompuing through the brush, getting closer and closer. Could only hear it coming. The nearest herd was two leases away and this thing had lived on the lease for years practically unnoticed. I was readyy for whatever came out, and then this huge black bitch busts into the clearing and snorts at me as he walks on by. Adrenalin rush is an understatement.

Later the landowner told me he wished I had taken the thing out. If we had more time I would havegone back and filled a dozen freezers. That thing was at least a half ton.

well i don't have access to a lease, but this past deer season (my first) on public land, i saw several hogs on the grasslands on lbj and caddo's. there were tracks all over both places especially near the stock tanks (ponds). the problem with public land is that you have to have that $48 license, and you can not bait hogs as you can on private. as for public land especially nearby, i prefered the caddos because you're able to use rifles for long distance shots on hogs. at the lbj grasslands (decatur), you're only able to use shotgun. at the lbj grasslands, these hogs were very smart and fast as hell. they can smell you a mile away and they won't allow you to get close enough with shotgun. if we go there, we'll need a group of people positioned in strategic areas to force them in our favor. if its just you and me, then we may have some opportunities near the ponds. we also may get lucky hanging around trails where they cross into private property. if they (hogs) know we're there on public area, they just know to go into the private areas to bed down like deer. if we're patient, they will eventually come back to look for food/water sources. that can be an all day thing and we may still not see them.

we really need a member here with land access. or knows someone that has a hog problem. in these instances, i've seen hogs just all over the place. i.e in southern oklahoma near texoma. we'd have better chances on private than public land, where its just over hunted. but i'm game either way as its really been fun just to scout areas for next season. send me a pm and lets organize a group. if you're some of the fortunate members with land access reading this, help us out... thanx

my best friend's uncle has about 200 acres nearby. we have a hog trap set up out there that has caught 15 hogs so far(most are 50lb to 100lb). neither him or i eat them but we give them to a guy we work with that does so its not a waste. we are talking about going out one nite and setting up to see if we can see a hurd of them out in the woods and take a bunch out at one time. i wotn be doing this until i get my ar15 though lol.

we are also in the process of building a huge trap(more liek a big holding pin) and we are going to feed the hogs we catch out and then send them to a local animal auction. they are giong for almost 2bucks a pound one man told us. easy good income if we are successful at it.

Man, I just got a new knife I wanted to try on the hogs, but it may be too small. And my dogs have never taken one, and they are fat and lazy these days. And I am a chickenshit

I am up for an LBJ hunt. I'll be a driver, I don't mind so long as I can share in the meat. I don't have a shotgun or a muzzle loader though. I might have to get one.

That 200 acres sounds cool too. We could do a group drive, you guys who just have to take one can be the guns.

BTW, I have a Thumper. A Jeff Cooper Thumper. If I could find the right stock it would be a hog shooting biotch. Inland M1 Carbine converted to 45 Win Mag.

$155 for a half day hog hunt, every 6th person is free. I have to keep that in mind. Usually these places keep the hogs nearby, put you in a blind and then chase the hog past you

That would be some awfully expensive pork
