What is a nice fairly inexpensive deer rifle??

I'm about to go buy a deer rifle today i was thinking about a .308 or 30-06. I kinda want a bolt-action with a clip but a semi-auto would be badass but I don't know how expensive they are. Where is a good place that has a good assortment of these rifles and which ones are nice? I kinda like the weatherby vanguard. HELP!!!

I bought a Remington 710 30-06. last year for 400 bucks, it shoots pretty decent for a cheap rifle, bolt is a little stiff but it groups very well.

I used to have that same rifle... and I see them all day long brand new for $300.00 with a scope included. You can get it in a couple few different calibers mine was a .270.

I've got a Remington 760 Gamemaster in .270 that I picked up for 130 bucks a couple years ago. It might be worth while to wait until the next gunshow.

ive got a remington 270 auto, te gun in my opinion is the right size to hunt almost any size game between deer to elk or if your just going to use it for deer hunting in texas you wont need anything much bigger thana 243

Can't go wrong with a Rem 700 or one of Savages new bolt-actions. Both shoot great out of the box, and really good with handloads. I would look at Cabellas too...Thiscat2000 picked up a CZ452 there in .17hmr for 200 under market value on the used gun rack..it was a steal!

Go with a model 700 Remington and stay away from the 710 . The bolt sucks and is very notchy plus the stock has a made on trigger guard . If it breaks , you are SOL . The 700 has a smoother bolt slide and there's a ton of after market things out for it . You can pick up a 700 with out a scope for around the same price as a 710 with a bushnell 3x9x40 cheapy scope . As for calibers , you really can't go wrong with a .270 .

I do agree the 700 is smother, but my 710 has gotten alot better with the more rounds i put through it.

7mm Mag or .308 are really flat shooting. You can shoot medium and large game with these 2 rounds. I think they are more flexible than a .270, which is what my little brother shoots.

I have a 7mm Mag Parker Hale.

My dad's .375 H&H Mag is too big for deer and hog and too heavy to lug around.

My brother's 8x57 Mauser is pretty nice.

Remington model 700 is a good gun.

Bolt action are more accurate than a semi-auto or slide action rifles.

.308's are not flat shooting , just dead accurate and predicable .

why get a big .30-06 for deer? i hunted for years with a .243 and it was excellent.. i have a 243, 270 and 30-06, and really the only thing i've ever used the 30-06 for was hog.. some of those big motherfuckers wont even twitch if you hit it with a 243. i shot one doe a year or two ago with the 30-06 and it took quite a bit of meat out, and its really so much overkill. i guess if you're a shitty shot it'd help you in that the deer would bleed out pretty fast with a big ass hole lol. not to mention the 30-06 is LOUD.

My opinion would be the opposite. A .243 would be too small, I have seen too many deer run 200+ yards before they fall. Hit the deer directly behind the shoulder blade with a 30-06 and theres no waste of meat, and the deer travels a few yards. Now a 7 mag or 300 mag would be overkill. 30-06 is a perfect texas deer gun. Just my .02

Look at ballistics for a .308 and a 30-06, very close to almost the same. I hear .308's are a little more accurate then a 30-06, but I have no problem hitten 1"@100 with my 30-06...

Magnum rounds are straighter than non-magnums.

Ultra-magnums are even straighter.

Only time I came across a hog I wish I had a .45 or .44 Mag. Fucker surprised me to where by the time I whipped the rifle around he was long gone.

.223, .243, .270, .30-06, 7mm Mag are quite common on deer leases.

Remember, a good scope can cost more than the rifle.
