so i know pretty much everything

except shit about guns... I've shot before, I've had a gun before (years ago), and I think it's about time I some guns again. I'm looking for something as a carry peice, something small for the wife to have at the house when I'm gone, and something to keep in the cars (three of them at the moment).

nothing crazy expensive although money isn't REALLY an object regarding safety, don't need anything that will take down helicopters, just something that would make something think twice about continuing to try to rob me if I shoot them

any suggestions? I'd prefer them all to be the same caliber and pretty similar if at all possible.

*Just to clarify, yes I know some shit about guns but what I'm asking are what the reliable brands are, what calibers are the best, and what people are carrying*

I already have a 12gauge for the house, but the wife doesn't feel comfortable shooting with something like that, I'd rather her have something smaller.

Thanks in advance

For Reliability go with a sig. IMO. But a shotgun is probely the best house defense weapon.

My advice to you is to go to a range that rents and shoot a 9mm, a .40, and a .45. the 3 best IMO to carry for protection. Sometimes .380s and .32s are enough, but IMO the above three are the best for knockdown power. Jacketed Hollow points are what you want to load it with.

As far as brand, again shoot several different in different calibers. The best self defense weapon isnt good unless you are comfortable shooting it, and can be semi-accurate with it. Placement is everything.

Good brands to test are Glock, Sig, Ruger, Taurus, HK, Kimber, Springfield Armory, etc....

.40 cal S&W and 9mm are probably the most popular sizes out there. For a little more knock down the .357 Sig round is catching on quite a bit and if you're really concerned with knock down then go ahead and get a .45 or carry a .357 magnum revolver.

As for the best brands thats like asking what the best beer or liquor is. I'm partial to Sigs and my next purchase will be a Kimber. Others will swear by Glocks, Springfields, Brownings, etc... Just go to a gun show and see what you like, head to a range that rents and try them out.

These guys have touched based on pretty much everything. 9mm is a cheap round. .40 is a little bit more "Snappier" (Muzzle flip) for me but is great for that added stopping power. When it comes to the size of your bullet remember this... "It doesn't matter how big the bullet is, but rather where you shoot them." Weather you get a .50AE or an .380 make sure you put the rounds in a major organ to make it count.

As far as guns for HD for you and the wife. Might I suggest a HK USP Compact, Glock 19/17, Sig P226/229, Kimber/Springfield 1911. THe best thing would be to go to a range and try some guns out to see what you two like.

I just picked up a Springfield XD40 and am very pleased with it. Seems a bit heavy compared to some of the other guns out there, but I like that. I'm sure it doesn't need to be said, but make sure you get decent ammo. I was firing some flat tipped pieces of shit that were in this pistol when I was testing it and they were flying all over the place. (10 feet out they were 3ft to the side of my aim point) Put in some winchester hollow points and they were dead on!

I'm not worried about having a heavy ass or big ass gun, i'd personally like to get a couple nickel plated deagels just to have for the "bling" factor, but my wife is both a foot shorter and 150 pounds lighter than I am (she's 5'5" 95lbs) so I don't even know if she could pick up something that's more than a few ounces haha

Leave a solid iron bar (about 30 lbs) leaning against the wall, and arrange to have her catch you banging her best freind.

Her strength might surprise you

I got it from a buddy of mine for $300 Couldn't believe he wanted to sell it almost brand new for that cheap. Cabella's I think has them at a pretty decent price too.
