Question Removing Varnish From Rifle Stock

So I have a Garand stock that has been laquered or varnished. Don't know exactly, all I know is it's shiny and I want it gone.

Can I just take it off with paint stripper? The stock will be going onto a Garand that's pretty much gonna be beat to shit. So all I'm looking for is getting rid of the shine and then maybe throwing on a little stain to darken it back up.

Steel wool?

Or a fine grit sandpaper?

Just need to get the top layer of shit off so you can stain the wood again...

Go get some stripper from home depot. They will point you to it.

Stripper will work just fine. You might have to let is sit for a longer period than what the can says.

Yeah I threw some paint stripper on there this morning. The varnish or whatever it was came off after some convincing scrubbing.

When I get home tonight I'll clean the stock up and then sand it down so I can throw on a couple quick coats of stain.

David, they have wood varnish remover that is tough enough to take off the varnish, yet not hurt the wood. You should also grab some brillo pads to help remove the gunk. End with a red brillo pad(equivalent of 600 grit) to get a nice smooth finish to stain.
