Position Title: Systems Engineer I (C / Unix)
Summary of Essential Job Functions:
The purpose of this position is to provide outstanding
Customer service by supporting or designing and
developing information technology solutions that meet
business needs, and are operationally excellent and
cost effective, while exhibiting outstanding
leadership and Southwest Airlines spirit.
Participates in the analysis and design of new
solutions or enhancements to existing applications or
a suite of integrated systems, typically used by one
business area.
Assists Customers and other Systems staff in
identifying appropriate technologies for business
requirements of an assigned project, sub-system or
suite of integrated applications.
Works with the project team to help ensure systems
developed are open, scaleable and in compliance with
standardized Southwest Airlines technical
architecture.
Assists project teams with technical evaluations and
vendor coordination.
May also design, code, test, install and/or support
these solutions or enhancements.
Communicates and coordinates efforts effectively
across interdepartmental teams with impacted
Customers.
Participates in the development of project plans,
project schedules, and status reports that address
Customer and Systems Leadership needs.
May function in the role of Project Leader,
responsible for managing small to medium technical
projects.
Required specialized background and skills:
C programming on a Unix platform, Sybase, and TCP/IP
programming is required.
On-call production support experience is required.
Qualifications and Requirements:
High School diploma or equivalency plus a college
degree or comparable business and data processing
knowledge required.
Five to seven years of related experience, including
two to three years of analysis.
Skilled in all aspects of the Systems Development Life
Cycle.
Able to read, analyze and interpret general business
periodicals, professional journals, technical
procedures and government regulations.
Ability to write reports, business correspondence and
procedure manuals.
Demonstrated ability to understand and document
business processes.
Demonstrated ability to work within an established
timeframe to complete a task.
Ability to effectively present information (verbal and
written) and respond to questions from groups of
managers, Customers and peers.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a
variety of variables in situations where only limited
standardization exists.
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions
furnished in written, oral, diagram and schedule form.
Must have authorization to work in the United States
as defined by the Immigrations Reform Act of 1986.
