Post Pondering getting a bike

I have ridden dirt bikes in the past, never a street bike let alone a fast street bike. The last time I was on a dirtbike I laid it down on the street doing about 45, I was only wearing sweat pants and a t-shirt mind you, no helmet. I got tank slap from a dirtbike (lol) I got fucked up pretty bad from it. That was 4 years ago. I currently have a nice daily driver and it is paid off, but I want something for my fast side. Should I get a used, preferably 2001 GSX-R 600? Thats what I really want. What next... Thanks.

My bike is for sale and in fairly good condition. It has a little bit of damage, but I wouldn't get a clean bike for your first bike. It's a 750 though. But it has a stabilizer on it. Call me if you're interested. Julie 214 532 5752

Just be careful! They are fun, but can be very dangerous.

What are the problems bikers face the most as far as accidents? I heard going through intersections and people turning left in front of you, and people pulling onto a roadway are the most dangerous things to bikers.

Everything is dangerous. Keep that mindset. All car drivers are trying to purposely kill you. You are invisible. Know one knows you're on the road except you. Ride like it.

Think for other people. I was faced with two cars trying to pull out of adjacent streets and out onto my road. I felt like Indiana Jones in the Temple of Doom. Deadly forces of biker squishing metal on the left and right. I fanned my brake to alert the guy behind me that I was slowing down and I watched the cars with my peripheral vision while planning my course of action should one idiot jump out on me. Which the guy on the left did do. But I was going slow enough that I saw him do it and I saw the guy on the right look at me. So it was good.

The moment you start thinking about what's for dinner is when you get blind sided.

Defintely get a used bike and I think a 01 GSXR 600 is perfect if you can contrl yourself to not get on it until you've spent some time riding. Some people say to get a 250 or a 500 and that may be perfect to as you can learn the aspects of handeling and braking without having to get yourself in trouble with controlling the power.

Defintely get gear and wear it! Wearing shorts and a T-Shirt (with a helmet) may look cool but imagine going down on the ground at 20-25 mph see how bad a case of rash you get. Now imagine double the speed.

<----- Never leaves home without helmet, jacket, and gloves (next are some riding pants and boots)

I see you post about how you ride, and I intend to do the same. You seem to be a cautious and careful rider which is great. I want to learn my bike the same as my car inside and out. I think the MSF course is a great idea too, I also plan on taking that. I am thinking the best time to get my bike would be in the Spring, due to the changing of the season to being nicer. That way I wont buy my bike and have it sit for some odd months. Thanks for all of the advice everyone!

Look at buying during the winter when prices are better. From what I've seen a lot of people are hard up for cash for Christmas or loose interest during the winter when they cannot ride as much and the prices get a little better for buying

Well I want to buy a used bike. Does that affect the prices being lower too? Also where should I look? I want to get one that isnt damaged(forks, internals, etc). Ive heard horror stories like that, since I have no clue what to look for. Thanks!

I would think being used would affect the prices more than a newer bikes but I don't know since I haven't really looked at prices on the newer ones. As far as looking, there have been a lot of bikes bought and sold here on DFW Stangs. I got a great deal on mine although I drove to Odessa to get it but it was worth it. I'd probably trust the history of a bike form people on this board than I would something in the newspaper or Autotrader. I wouldn't want to buy a damaged and repaird bike myself unless it's something minor.

I'd be the wrong person to invite along for an opinion. I'm still learning alot but for a better opinion I'd have to defer it to someone else who's been riding longer than me.
