Help me w/ something.
I've noticed on hard acceleration that the bike seems like the rear tire is losing grip and then finding it again. Feels like tire slip. Whenever I get on it and the rpms come up (like around 7k or so) I feel a "slip" and then the bike goes. It's almost like accelerating in a car and then you hit a small bump, loose traction for a split second, regain it and then go.
What is that? Chain loose? Sprocket? Tranny? Who works on bikes around here? Guess I'll call ARH to check it out.

It's either your tire or your clutch slipping, probably the tire if it's kind of old or worn. Get a good tire, you only have tow and there cheap. I have a hook up on race take-offs. $150.00 for both installed. They hook like a mutha and are hot lapped once. There all I ever used on my R6.

Yea it's more than likely the clutch/tire caussing the slip....but check to make sure the chain is tightened, cause my old gix600 did that after i put a new motor in it and hadn't had the chain tightened up...If it feels like its 'skipping a tooth' under acceleration then that is more than likely the problem.

Check out Garage Mahall for some take offs. I've heard nothing but good things about this guy.
Guys, how much slack should the chain have?

1/2" to 3/4" both up and down with you pulling on it...dont get it so tight that it has no slack, but if it's visibly drooping on the top and bottom then tighten that sucker.

Thanks. What tools do I need to work on a bike? Should I go to the Yamaha shop and buy a tool kit? What about tightening the chain? Does the manual tell you how to do it?

Nah dont go to yamaha for a tool kit, they barely contain any tools to actually do anything. Standard tools work the best.
Theres a "screw" with two nuts on it just in front of the rear axle on the swing arm. thats how to tighten it. I never did it on my old R1, but i'm positive its the same way as this gixxer. |

That's what my bike was doing for awhile, The chain was jumping teeth on the back sprocket. just check the chain and tighten it if needed

My chain has GOT to be too loose. I held it up yesterday and man, it seems like it has alot of play. It doesn't come off the rear sprocket. (An article said to grab the chain from the rearmost part of the rear sprocket and pull on it. It showed a little of the tooth but, I don't think it's excessive but, the chain seems to have a lot of play.
