Quarter mile times, reliability, resale? COME INSIDE!

okay guys, i've narrowed it down further, i need some experienced advice.

i'm going to buy one of two bikes in the next couple of days. Any of you raced/ridden/bought or sold either of these, any help would be greatly appreciated.

2004 R1
2004 GSXR 1000

does anyone have any local 1/4 times, or know which may have better resale value?
i'd really prefer not to lose my ass if i decide to sell this thing in a year or two.

Sportbikes in general lose resale value quickly!!! They are no different than sports cars. Look at mustangs and camaro's!! If it's your first bike, you might want to look at used ones

the problem is that my bank wont approve me for a used bike really.

my bank doesnt do any loans for less than 10k, and i'd really like to have a bike that i dont have to worry about the previous owner.

that, and they just keep making these things more powerful every year.

damn, i wonder what it'd do with a 300lb rider?

I have a 04 Gixxer 1000 and I believe it is the most comfortable bike out of the liter bikes. I love the appearance and the colors as well! My business partner bought a 04 R1. I rode it alot before I got mine, thats why I decided to get a liter bike. The R1 feels very well put together and very solid. I do have a few complaints which made me decide I was going to get something different. First is the undertail exhaust, very stylish but makes the bike extremely hot around the frame area and under the seating area. If you wear shorts one day, your legs will burn. Also the seat is very uncomfortable. I would go with the gixxer. How much you getting the gixxer for?

If you like the looks of the r1 better, I'd go with that. Performance and resale are about the same on all of them. The biggest difference is the looks!!! 11k is too much to spend for something you're not sure about!!!

One other thing you need to take into consideration is insurance. Make sure whatever you do you finance less than $10K. You then only have to carry liability insurance. Depending on how old you are it is going to be expensive for full coverage. I carry liability on both of my bikes and it is less than $150 a year. Of course I am 32 with a good record.

IMO, I am not a big gixxer fan. I like them but they are everywhere. I have an 02 R1 and an 04 ZX10R. I still love Yamaha although I am not a big fan of the R1 for this year. Have you thought about going with a little smaller bike? The R6 and others are pretty nice and better priced if you are still a little unsure.

Yeah, Kawasaki baby. Bone stock went 9.82 @ 145. Best time to date with two teeth down in front is a 9.71 @ 143. Best 1/8 mile is a 6.29 @ 118. Not the most solid bikes in the world, but they are fast.....very fast.

yeah, i am WAY to big to be comfortable on any 600 or the zx10, and i really dont want to have to lay all the way in the thing everytime i want to merger, so a 600 aint gonna cut it.

Adam, why even worry about 1/4 performance? With the power level of these bikes it would require an expert rider to make a difference. It's basically comes down to rider and skill level. Get whatever bike feels good for you.

I honestly think your beating a dead horse with this issue. How much of a difference in power are we talking about between all of the current crop of liter bikes?

Honda 466 lbs. Wet 149,1 HP @ 11,500 75.9 Ft/lbs. @ 8500
Kawasaki 436 164.2 HP @ 12,000 80.0 Ft/lbs. @ 9750
Suzuki 443 152.3 HP @ 11,000 78.1 @ 8500
Yamaha 450 158.9 @ 12,750 74.4 @ 10,000

Honda 10.16 @ 142.1 mph
Kawasaki 9.92 @ 147.4

Do the math. The 1/4 mile times were done with what I'll assume is an expert rider. With you or most people on this board I'll say wouldn't be able to get much of a difference to really matter between most of the bikes. Stop looking at the numbers and go with what feels more comfortable.

i've pretty much decided that i can deal with the heat of the undertail in exchange for the pimp juice looks, i just want to know what kind of real HP they put out.
trust me, i read sportrider's reviews too, but i don't think they are to be believed, because they talk about every bike like it's the best since sliced bread.

yes, i believe those are probably hand assembled bikes, because i've looked and i havent seen any of these bikes put out 155 to the wheel, on anybody but a magazine's dyno.


the zx10r is WAY too small for me to ride.

2005 will bring some pretty sweet bikes from Suzuki. For someone your size, the 2005 Busa might be the way to go, or just wait for the 2005 GSXR 1000. I guarantee it will blow all of the other literbikes away. It might not be as comfy as the 2004, as it;s suppossed to have a lower seat heigh, slightly smaller wheelbase, etc. Buy that used 929 for now that you were telling me about if you can swing it, and buy a new bike next year. You will learn a ton of skills by just hopping on a bike now, and getting out there. Take the msf course, get you license, get some good gear, and get that 929 if you can!! When the 2005's come out, then you will have even more bikes to compare! This is just my opinion, but I'd HATE to see you get a new '04 R1/GSXR, and something happen to it, then you owe 9k on a bike that's worth $4500 after being torn up. I don't think you will have a problem handling the power, it's just that SHIT HAPPENS sometimes on bikes, you have to be prepared and think about your financial state if something were to happen. Here is the UK version of the 2005 GSXR 1000. Probably will be very little difference in the stateside version.By the nasty looks of that thing..you did good by purchasing the 04 R1
