Pots, Pans, and stuff...

Where do yall buy your kitchen stuff from and how much do you pay for it? I've been in my apartment 4 years now and all my pots and pans are over 15 years old, falling apart, and it's time to replace it all. Is there any difference at all in buying a set of say sauce pans for $75 at Walmart then going and spending $200 at what you'd see at Sams or elsewhere? School me on this...

Yes and no. How you use/treat them has a lot to do w/ their lifespan as well.

More proof to the sayin, they don't make em like they used to.

I got a set of kitchen aid off of My Coke Rewards almost two tears ago and their holding up quite well. They're fairly inexpensive considering some of the big names.

If you check the sales @ Kohls they typically have good prices on them and check Tuesday Morning as well. <------My mother in laws advice.

Just make sure you google what you are looking at to make sure you're getting a good deal on Overstock.

Agreed. I've seen the most fucked up, broken shit on clearance at Ross. The shoe section literally looks like people had a shoe fight.

I'm sure the Uber-Bling kitchen set will tell you that you have to buy a $1000 set of copper bottom pots. But in reality...pots are pots. I know there are preferences in materials, glass, aluminum, copper...nonstick etc.

Unless you beat the hell out of them , pots & pans just don't "wear" out. I've got some of my mother's 50 year old pots & skillets and they work fine.

After my divorce, my ex left me NO pots & pans...and we had some nice ones. I was broke & bought a set of $35 cheapo non stick pans at Walmart....and they have worked just fine.

All Clad is great for the money. I've got some All Clad pieces that have held up well, but they are all being replaced by Optio by Lincoln. Mainly because Optio is one of the top lines out there, and I can get them free. Plus, they are all induction ready, and during my kitchen remodel, my drop in range will be replaced with an induction range. Keep in mind, you get what you pay for. For the record, all cookware is NOT created equal, and you get what you pay for. Cleaning and care play a HUGE part in how long your cookware will last. Someone that takes care of a cheap, shit set, will get more life out of it than someone that buys an expensive set and treats them like shit. That said, it's still cheap shit, and there are tons of food safety/ sanitary issues that surround cheap cookware.

I got a set from Costco and I've been really pleased with it. It was only about $100 so it's not a real high end set, but durable and practical.

If you cook everything in a microwave, you won't need pots and pans.

Really? Ever tried warming up a can of soup or chili in the microwave, while still in the can?

the kirkland brand at costco was actually a top rated product in consumer reports a year or so ago. I would recommend those or All-Clad.

Just wrap it like a big burritto, then tilt one end and let it slowly pour into your mouth. Don't even need silverware or a dishwasher that way!

I'd say look for something in stainless, with some weight to it. The most important thing is a nice thick copper bottom to distribute the heat evenly and keep it flat (dented/warped pan bottoms FTL). I don't like teflon coating because you have to baby it and it's going to start peeling off sooner or later. I would also recommend a good solid cast iron skillet. Nothing like food cooked in a good seasoned cast iron skillet, mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

The Optios I'm getting also have a lifetime warranty, and in commercial applications, I've only seen the warranty put to use a handful of times.

Yeah, cast iron skillets are a must. Very, very versatile. You can cook in them, or flip them over and cook on the bottom surface on the grill. They kick ass for capturing heat when they are upside down. Throw it on the grill on high for a bit, and you can sear your steaks at 800ish degrees in no time.

Not to mention the camping applications. I've cooked a weekend's worth of food in one skillet over a fire. When the zombies attack, you'll want to make sure your skillet is in the same crate as your AR and 15,000 rounds, and you'll be all set to get the maximum culinary enjoyment out of your doomsday survival scenario.

Why do people always ask..where to buy this and that for the house?

Get a Costco membership and you'll never have another worry.

Seriously, Costco was where we bought our last set (Kitchen Aid - not the best, not the worst) about 2 years ago from left over money from our membership rebate. They always have some set in stock at a reasonable price.

Take care,

I have a set of the lower end Calphalon stuff that I picked up several years ago. Heavy duty, and still looks brand new after 8 years of service. Moderately pricey, about $500 for everything I bought.
