Can't update Internet Explorer.....

DFWStangs has been giving me shit. I've been getting avatars popping up in the middle of posts, big red X's everywhere and other messed up shit so I decided to try to update to IE 6.1 to see if that helps. I keep getting this message that says 'Can not save to C:/WNNT/Windows Setup Files because it's a read only file.'
I've tried EVERYTHING to find the file they are talking about to change it but I can't. Now MORE shit is screwed up. I can't open up PM's or my address book cuz all I get is a blank page. Matter of fact, I can't open up anything that's an attachment and will pop up a new screen. :mad:

What operating system do you have? By the C:\winnt in your post, Im guessing W2K or NT 4.0. If so, you need to have administrator rights to do the update. If this is a work computer, most likely you do not have admin rights to your own PC.

It is NT 4.0 but it's my mom's home computer. I've been trying to get her to change from NT 4.0 and hopefully she's finally going to listen. :rolleyes: NT4.0 is not good for home use, IMO.

NT 4.0 is not good for anything.

You still have to administrator rights to install anything. Its been so long since I have worked on NT 4 that I cant remember the screens, but see if you can go to the Control Panel and find an administration options or Users. Make sure the user you are logging in as has admin rights. If you can't change anything, you arent an admin and might be SOL.

LOL! We are still running NT 4 on our "account" boxes here at work but will be upgrading (finally) to WinXP shortly.

I've been having the same problems on my linux box with Mozilla 1.3b.... I thought it was just me...

Here's what I would do, right click on the WinNT folder and go to Properties, from here go to Permissions and grant the "Everyone" group Full permissions to WinNT and its subfolders. It will take a while to update the perimissions on all the files and folders, once it's done try to install IE 6.01 again. If you don't have access to set permissions on the WinNT folder then you need to logon as an Administrator and then try the install again.
