Damn laptop went out the other day. I have no idea how to troubleshoot a hardware issue on this friggin thing so I'd rather not fool with it and just send it in.

If you gotta know the details... Went to go power off my laptop that I had connected to the internet because I was about to leave for work. Turned out that it was already off and I thought it was odd since I knew I left it on and connected. Went to power it on and no response other than the green power light. Unplugged the AC cored and tried just the battery. Nada. Removed battery and tried just the AC cored. Nada. When I hit the power button the green power light comes on but it's dead and won't even eject the CD Drive :(

you say you get a geeen pwr light correct? Any other sign of life? Can you hear the HD spin up? No post beep or nothing huh? I assume you are getting nothing on the display. Before you pronunce it as DOA, you might hook up an external display.

Then remove EVERYTHING. Battery, HD, CDROM, floppy, memory etc. If you still dont get a post or error beeps (usually apparent when no memory is installed), the verdict is prob not going to be good.

To take it one step further would be to disassemble it and do a visual inspect and reseat all connections. Also, could take some study, determine where the power circuit is and get a VOM and make sure you are getting 5 and 12VDC

Beyond that it could be some small component but unfortunately nothing that will be user serviceable. I think you already know how parts will go for that lpatops in general and depending on its age, it could be cheaper to sell for parts, cut your losses, and buy another unit

hope this helps

Thanks for the response Mike. Man, it doesn't look good judging by what you have added. No Post Beep, no HD activity AT ALL, the CD-Drive won't even eject. I can remove the memory and stuff but as far as checking the power circuit I'm not going to go that far

Sounds like the internal power supply is out.

It's a pretty easy fix.

If it's under warranty, just call Compaq, and they will either

A-send you a box
or
B-send someone out to fix it

If it's not under warranty, I can probably fix it for you, if we can get the parts for a decent price. That little plaque on the wall says I'm certified to repair Compaq products... :D

It's dead, nothing comes on. No fan, CD Drive won't eject, nada. Batttery still had juice and it wouldn't turn on the computer either :(

Ya, I'm thinking it's the power supply now. Hmm... I really need to holler at Compaq.

Jose- I did tech support on Hewlett packard laptops for a couple years...there is a DC converter board inside of the laptop, it recieves the power before the motherboard does... with the problems you have listed, this part I am talking about has been a problem before. You should call Compaq and see if they can confirm if that is the problem or not...could be the motherboard itself though...hope that helped a little
