I've got a Phillips CDRW 804k. This thing seems to have a conspiracy going on against me. It stopped working on my old system. So I started looking for a new burner just assuming this thing was dead. I ended tearing down the old computer system and building a new one in the meantime. Well, I thought I'd try the burner on the new system just to make sure it was dead. Get the new system built and fire it up....CD Burner is still dead. The power doesnt seem to work as when I press the "open door" button, nothing happens. So I scour the sunday ads and find the next burner I want to buy. Next, I DL and installed Ad Aware 6.0 tonight. It required you to reboot the computer after installation. Well, on the reboot, I notice the OS(WIN XP) "found new hardware" and it was my Phillips CDRW. So I pressed the "open door" button a few times and the drive opened and closed each and every time. I was like "sweet". I ended up tossing the ads thinking "this is cool, don't have to blow anymore money". Well, I surf the net for a while and then I decide to turn my attention back to the burner. Well, now it doesnt work again. Door won't open. So in short, I don't know what's going on. XP seemed to recognize the burner for a little while. When it wouldnt work again, I went into my computer and was looking to uninstall the burner and reboot and hoped XP would find it again. When I get there.....it's not even listed anywhere among the other hardware. So at this point, I don't know what's going on. Any suggestions to what might be going on here?

What video card and processor are your running? Also, what size power supply?

Also make sure it doesn't have any sort of "stand by" mode that it goes into when idle (it'd be retarded if it does... but I've seen some drives do this). Barring that, I'd say the drive is bad, as it appears to be losing power.

I'll rule that out though as it was acting funny on my other system, a Gateway PIII 450Mhz sys, ATI Rage card, and only a 200W supply. I'll also rule out XP since the burner worked fine for the last 6 months on that.
Darkwolf, I'm leaning towards your theory of it just going out. I don't think it has a standby since even when I press the buttons it still doesnt do anything. Guess I'll go ahead and get a new one and be done with the headaches.
Here is something that might help.
1 go to my computer and right click
2 go to properties and click
3 go to hardware and click
4 now go to device manager
5 go to dvd/cd-rom drives
If the drivers for the cd-rw are installed you will see the name phillips dadada. Dose the name of your new cd-rw show up?

Goto your device manager, and double click to get the settings for your cd burner. There is two settings in there you want to turn off, I can call them exactly off my head as its been a while since I've messed with device manager, one is to not do the autoplay thing for when you put the cd in the cdrom and it automatically loads the cd, and the other one is a sync related one I believe.

Depends on the OS but that's one thing to try. 2000 / XP don't have those options in device manager, and at the same time, the autoplay doesn't interfere with burning in them, like it would in 9x.

I just got a new burner and everything has worked flawlessly since. The other burner just seemed to being going in and out. End of problem.
