for the longest time my computer has been locking up on the net only. I have Verizon ISP and a dial up connection. My computer came with ME as the OS. I switched to 2000 and did a clean install. The only other programs I have loaded are MS Office and the software for my digital camera. After I changed OS to 2000 the locking up while on the net problem went away but now it is back. I have had to restart my computer 4 times in the past 20 minutes because it locks up dead! My question is, is there anything thing on the OS that keeps records of faults? Any place I can check to see what the conflict is? I even downloaded a new version of the browser and the Verizon software as a long shot but it is still locking up. Anyone help a fella out before my computer goes airborne?

Check your resources. There might be an off chance that some other hardware is conflicting with the modem. Also, have you tried updating your modem drivers?
My first guess would be that it's something to do with the modem, rather than the OS, since it's only happening while you're online, while the modem is active.
Unless it BSOD's, it doesn't really keep track of errors, other than what you can dissern in the Event Viewer (Admin. Tools). But if it's hard locking, it may not be getting a chance to write what's happening to the Event Log ... worth a shot to check it out though.

I wouldnt mind taking a look at it and fixing it. Could just be a simple hardware/driver issue, but it sounds to me like normal wear and tear windows usage, and its time for a fresh install. How long have you had this install?

There's no such thing as "normal wear and tear windows usage", that would require regular fresh installs. End users, installing every random piece of shit program / plug-in that pops up on their screen while they're surfing the net ... that's a cause for regular fresh installs. It's not Windows fault that Joe Blow thinks that fucking purple monkey is just the coolest thing in the world
It's either hardware (modem, or something conflicting with it), or shoddy drivers.

This is what I was referring to. Windows normal wear and tear comment was meant that seemingly after you install so much software, the systems arent as stable anymore, wasnt trying to ridicule your OS. If his system is been on the same install for a over a year, it might be time to look into backing up and reinstalling everything new.
I'm not saying thats 100% to do a fresh install, obviously its a hardware/driver problem, Windows never has issues with just software.

Everyone is shooting in the dark, as we don't know what hardware you have on your system.
It *sounds* like you have a shoddy driver from the manufacturer, or you are have conflicting IRQs. Most hardware can share IRQs and daisy chain the requests, but some can't.
First thing, go to your Start Menu, click Control Panel. Look for the System icon and look for Device Manager on one of the tabs. I can't remember which tab it is on in 2000.
Look for anything that has a "!" beside it, as this will tell you there is some conflict Windows can't resolve.
If that doesn't show anything, tell us:
1. What modem is being reported (under the Modem tree). Right click the modem and click properties. Under resources, tell us what Windows is reporting as the IRQ.
2. What sound card is being reported. Right click the sound card and click properties. Under resources, tell us what Windows is reporting as the IRQ.
When you say "locked up", do you mean the mouse won't move, and the keyboard won't type? Or just that the mouse won't move? Can you hit Ctrl-Esc and bring up the start menu?

thanks for the replies, I will check out what you mentioned when I get home. Oh, I had to buy a new modem because when I switched the OS from ME to 2000 it did not recognize it at all. That modem came with the computer and I could not find a driver to downlaod so I just bought a new one. It made no difference that the old one. I will look into when I get home.....

In all honesty ... that's any OS. :p
