I have a HP computer with a DVD Writer, but what software do I need to burn a DVD to be able to play in my home DVD player? I saw some past posts about not being able to get past Copyright when copying a DVD (which is what I want to do).
I don't know what DVD X or Divx is either so an explaination would be helpful too. :)
Thanks!
BTW.. I am downloading the GordianKnot right now but I'm not sure if that's what I need.

My brother claims its not that hard, the DVD's that he has made we just downloaded in ISO format and burnt just like on a regular CDR, he's burnt LOTR Twin Towers ( it looks CLEAN ), and Signs which looked good as well. He didnt have to use any special software.
Now if you want to make a custom DVD of your own stuff, thats obviously different. Dont know anything about that.

Did it also included the menus or was it only the movie? I was just curious I heard most iso’s cant include the menu’s.
www.dvdxcopy.com
I heard gets everything makes a complete copy of the DVD.
Q. Will my copy retain the same quality that is on my DVD?
A. Every copy made with DVD X COPY software is EXACTLY like the original. There is no video or audio compression. DVD X COPY is the first program to copy ANY DVD movie without any loss in quality.
Q. Does the copy retain all of the bonus footage and menus?
A. DVD X COPY copies all BONUS footage, like trailers, interviews and other special features.
Anyone tried them?

Gordian Knot is good for compressing movies to DivX ... which will not play on a home DVD player. If you want to make something that'll play on one, you'll 1) need to make sure your DVD player will support either VCD, SVCD, or both, 2) will need to decide if you want to compress the movie at all (VCD, or SVCD will compress the movie), or leave it uncompressed ... which may require more than one DVD.
Now, SmartRipper will decrypt, and rip a full DVD (never used DVD X Copy, so I can't vouch for it) ... and it's free. You can either choose to take the whole DVD, or just the movie, or just the bonus materials, etc. If you rip the whole DVD, it'll take everything, including menus, bonus materials, extra audio tracks, etc. The ensuing files will be roughly 6 - 9 gigs (which is where an uncompressed DVD will actually take more than one DVD-R (which is only 4.7 gigs)). Just write them to the blank DVD's with whatever DVD writing software you have, and they should play on any DVD player.
If your player supports VCD or SVCD, you can then run them through an mpeg encoder, which will reduce the size/quality of the finished product, to about a high quality VHS resolution. Still looks fine when viewed on TV, and should be small enough to get 1, 2, maybe 3 or more movies on one 4.7 gig DVD-R. The drawback is you won't get any of the menus this way, unless you make your own ... and unless you rip each chapter individually, you won't have the option to skip back and forth to the next or previous chapter. Fastfoward, and rewind should still work though. If you put more than one movie on a DVD, the next/previous skip funtion will actually take you to the next/previous movie... unless again, you did each movie's chapters individually, which could get messy if you're wanting to put more than one movie on the disc.
The 3rd option, is to use Gordian Knot, and compress your movies to DivX. While not playable on a home DVD player, it will be playable on your computer, and if your computer has a video out port, to go to your TV, it'll be just as good as watching them on a home DVD player. Otherwise, you can just watch them on any computer with a DVD drive, and the DivX codec installed. You'll aslo be able to get more than one movie on each disc this way too.

I'm trying to burn a copy of an existing DVD, not download one from the web. Some guy at Office Max told me that he downloaded some software from Japan that allows him to burn DVD's to his CD-R's.
DarkWolf,
The only website that I found with SmartRipper downloaded it in German (I think) and didn't work. Said it was locked or something.

Impossible, you cant get 4.5GB+ of data to fit on a 650mb cd. You could convert the DVD to mpeg and encode to divx, lower the quality and have the video fit on a cd, thats what we used to do. Darkwolf is on the right track.

Try here (http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/smartripper.cfm).
Click on the download link/picture, and then answer "No" to the disclaimer.
To use SmartRipper, you'll have to first play a short portion of the DVD you're going to rip. Pretty simple, just put the DVD in, load up whatever DVD software (I presume probably WinDVD, or PowerDVD, but maybe they've put a proprietary one on there), play it for a few seconds. Then close out of that program, load up SmartRipper, and it should be ready to go.
It's pretty straightforward once you're in. Under Rip-Method, there's 3 buttons. If you want everything, including menus, and bonus materials, choose "Backup". That'll copy everything. The middle one allows you to choose which files you want to rip, and the first option, allows you to rip by chapter/title (if you're just wanting the movie). There's a few tutorials on the net, but the best one is probably in Gordian Knot (or at their website). All of the tutorials I've read though, are only concerned with ripping just the movie, and not doing the Backup.
Also, I just read up a little on DVD X Copy ... It's a product from 321 Studios ... the same people who package DVD Copy Plus for $50 - $100. Yet DVD Copy Plus is simply a package containing SmartRipper, DVDx, and VCDEasy ... all programs freely available on the net. They're charging $50 - $100 for their "oh so handy" tutorial. Definitely not worth it. It wouldn't surprise me at all if DVD X Copy is simply SmartRipper, and maybe some other free DVD Ripping programs ... and they're just gonna charge you $100 for their tutorial

Where can I get DVDx and VCDEasy? Will I need those to copy a DVD?

Only if you want to copy a DVD to CD (VCD or SVCD ... DivX would be different). If you're wanting to copy basically from DVD to DVD-R(s), then no, you won't need 'em ... well ... yeah, if you want to compress the movie. But not for a straight up copy.
