Attbi.com addresses changing
01/23/2003
By DOUG BEDELL / The Dallas Morning News
For the second time in two years, thousands of AT&T Broadband Internet subscribers in North Texas must switch e-mail addresses.
Comcast Corp. recently acquired ATTBI, leading to the change from addresses ending in attbi.com to comcast.net.
Dallas ATTBI spokeswoman Angel Biasatti said the company plans a 90-day transition to the new addresses. In late 2001, about 850,000 AT&T Broa dband customers lost network connections and had to switch their @home accounts to @attbi.com.
Ms. Biasatti would not release the number of affected customers in North Texas, but the company said more than 2 million subscribers will face the change nationwide.
Mail sent to old attbi.com e-mail addresses will be forwarded to the new comcast.net addresses for at least60 days before the attbi.com addresses are shut down, the company said. Any mail sent to the attbi.com addresses after the grace period will bounce.
The transition will begin in March, and Ms. Biasatti said customers will be notified well in advance to prevent problems.
News of the latest switchover has not sat well with many ATTBI customers, who complain that notifying friends, newsletters, business associates and online merchants is an unnecessary chore.
Three years ago, EarthLink merged with MindSpring, and e-mail addressed to MindSpring.com subscribers gets through to this day. Similarly, more than two years after Qwest acquired US West, e-mail addressed to USWest.net customers works.
