View Full Version : So do you prefer to hand wax your car or use a buffer?

Did the hand wax today and spend a good 2 hours just on the waxing. Any negatives to using a buffer? I think I'm gonna go that route next time.

I hand wax the car. Remove the wax with one of those 100% cotton towels. Finally, I shine it up with the buffer with one of those super soft bonnets.
If you use the buffer to do it all........don't, or at least apply the wax by hand.

Easy to fugg up a good paint job with a buffer. Leave it for the pros or practice on something you won't regret burning through to the primer on.

On My Old Probe, I used a Buffer and Wax
But only Zanio for the Buick!!! And the only way to do Zanio properly is by hand, but it doesn't take as much effort as waxing!!!

Zaino by hand blows everything else away IMHO... http://64.81.114.233/ubb/biggrin.gif

I just keep mine under a cover at my parents house since it never runs anyways. But when it used to run I used the buffer (I think) my Dad got. I'm not sure if it's a buffer or not, but it was designed specifically for waxing cars, so there's not a risk of burning up paint (it doesn't spin very fast and the pad is very soft). Someday if I'm ever out of debt I'm going to give Zaino a try, but until then, buffer it is! BTW, how long do you have to wait before washing or waxing a newly painted fiberglass hood (also sitting in the garage)?

Im a hand man, I like to do it by hand, not as hard on the paint, and I dont think the buffer is that much quicker.

I use a random orbital buffer with a foam pad for application and my hands to remove and buff. its just a time saver. i'll ussualy do 2-3 coats at a time. otherwise it would take to long and i would only do one in an afternoon.

If you insist on staying with old technology, like a carnuba wax then yes, a rotary buffer will save you some time in applying it. If you move up to Zaino, it's easily and best applied by hand.

Thanks, dude. Would you believe that the paint is 12 years old from the original restoration? And it wasn't a very good job anyway, it was just over sprayed instead of taking it down to the bare metal. So you can see what a few ( http://64.81.114.233/ubb/smile.gif) coats of Zaino can do!

Few??? coats of Zaino... haven't you hit double digits yet in the coat department Forrest? http://64.81.114.233/ubb/biggrin.gif
I've just recently become a Zaino nut, and the by hand part isn't that bad.

I'm just not sold on the whole Zaino idea. I'm not sure how hard it'd be to match paint if you had got into a wreck and had to blend paint into an adjacent panel. Anyhow...
marc, if you're going to use something like Meguair's, use a random orbital buffer. It greatly reduces the chances of burning paint. Don't use the buffer on edges or door handles. Rotary buffers are bad unless you are a professional detailer who works on cars every day. Random Orbital is the way to go for a good even application of regular wax. Zaino recommends not using a buffer but they're product is a whole nother ball of wax (haha, get it?!) Anyhow...
Aside from Zaino... the key to it all is selecting a good polish to bring out the shine. The wax simply locks in what your polish did and protects the paint. Other things like swirl reducer, and other surface preps can be used... try a lil here and there and see what you like. Hope this helps.

Good advice GE, about noting the difference between polish and wax, it's very important.
Oh, BTW, no problems with regard to newly painted panels using Zaino. All you'd do is just take the existing Zaino off the entire car, use isypropal (sp?) alcohol in a spray bottle and a good towel. The stuff comes right off and then you can start over again so the shine matches all panels on the car.
