View Full Version : Denton results tonight?
Just wondering how every did? Sorry I didn't make it out after all, but my nephew was extremely sick(104+) and we decided to stay home and be with him. I'll try to catch yall next time..........post up.
well, it could have been better, I had 2 8.29's a couple 8.3's and alot of passes with no traction. I had maybe 3-4 good passes out of 10. ohhh well, it wasnt the best night, but it will be ok. My slicks are about toast as well.
Everyone else was having about the same luck as I was. One good pass, then one bad pass, and then one good pass. Ohh well. there was prolly 90% street tire cars, so what can ya do.
Marcus ran some fast times, Justin, and Matt also ran new personal best.
Good job guys.

had a great time and got some good baseline times to work with. thanks to beej for letting me use the slicks. it was fun. i definately need lots of practice.
best street tire pass:
60'-2.199
ET-8.873
MPH-84.062
my first pass with the slicks was going to be my best but the car got very floaty in third and i let out.
60'-1.76
ET-8.709
MPH-65.058
my best pass was:
60'-1.776
ET-8.415
MPH-82.601
the best pass with my car was actually made by BJ in his first pass with my car. i believe it was:
60'-1.81
ET-8.31
MPH-83.65
all in all i had a great time and can't wait to get back to improve on the times. goal for the year is still 7.9x at 85.x. i've gotta catch Justin, Matt, and BJ first. :)

How did BJ get a better ET than you with a worse 60ft? He is either a shifting fool, or there was a longer cool down or something. I think you have 84mph easy since it went 84 on the street tires.

well, my first pass i think was gonna be better than his until i let out. and then my 8.41 pass was hot lapped right after he finished. if i would have let the car cool it probably would have ran better but the track was getting too cold as it got later. BJ is a good driver.

Uhg,
Got I hate this ind rear, managed a 2.15 60ft and a 8.8@83.6. The 4.10's helped very little with stock tires. But I am too lazy and too focused on the lx to give a shit about how the Cobra run's.
Saw many ls1 fbody's running mid 8's@84-88.

Maybe it was that orange SS making pass after pass.:)
Btw I am not sure what is wrong with Stroker95 car:confused:
I am beginning to think the cr is not right on that car or maybe timing.

I think everyone was having trouble hooking up last night except me and Justin. It must be the tires!!!
I was very happy with my results last night. I not only backed up my best of 8.23 from Ennis, but I have found that the car, or I do better on a hot lap.
Justin, glad to see another 99+ running strong and it happens to be silver too!!!
Stroked95's car needs a GT-40 intake and not that spyder. When BJ made that pass in that car, he was not spinning that bad but still only managed a 9.16. Even with the slicks I think the best the car saw was an 8.7. For having another 100rwhp than me, there is something wrong with that car. I don't think it is the driver but it has to be the intake on that car. Maybe the timing advance is off or the plugs are fouled from running VERY rich. When he started the car last night next to me, I could smell raw fuel that was unburned, not just rich smelling. He might even have a bad injector or something. That car should be running 7.5's on slicks.
mike89lx
01-04-2003, 11:53 AM
I don't think a long runner intake would help his performance. I mean ls1's run a short runner, so do the lt1 guys. Who cares about lo end trq when you are racing? you don't need trq down at 3000 imho. I think you are on to something though about running to rich. The motor might not have the cr he thinks either.

congrats on all the good runs everyone! Im impressed with the MPH marcus is putting out, getting 85 mph will be pie, same with 7.9 if you can run in the daytime with a warm track.
Good MPH for Mike also, 83.6!
Mike, yeah 4.10s and street tires, i didnt pick up much at all either ET wise or MPH, simply because of limited traction, but you can feel the potential.
I would havy enjoyed coming and watching, but i had other plans that turned out really fun also. Next weekend will be my last chance here to get a run in.

Yes if Ford only put a sollid rear in this Cobra, it should go high 7's with the proper gears, suspension etc. Nice running 2v motors out Friday, some had interiors taken out etc, but still nice times.
I would like to duplicate Bob Cosby's 99 Cobra, nice 11sec n/a car.

i dont know why it wouldnt run a decent number either. it ran faster and wuicker before the spyder, but it didnt make as much power back then either. i dont know what it is, but im going to try and find out. as far as the compression mike, it does have 10.0:1.
the pistons are je, and are specifically for this motor, its a custom je piston for that compression ratio. in actuality, according to jason, its like 10.04:1 with the 61 cc heads. thats according to thier calculation. it did feel lazy to me last night. i think it is must faster on the street than on the track, plus, my driving isnt the best. this is something ive been thinking about most of the day today, and will figure out. stay tuned for more drama, lol.

Hey stroker, what intake did you have on the car before the spyder? What you should do is compare the two dynos and see what your average HP is. You might be peaking much higher with the spyder, but if you aren't making any power down low, then the car will run like it is. Also, if you get the a/f ratio worked out, it should pick up a couple of tenths. There are 15-20 things that you are going to have to work through to find out why the car is not running very strong but start with the small stuff like the timing curve, a/f, fouled plugs, Fuel pressure, wires and coil. Then compare the dyno numbers. I think you will find that the spyder is actually hurting your average HP number. You want the most power (Area) under the curve. This will be the faster car unless you have an auto with a stall. give it some time and well thought out investigation and you will get it running right.
sorry you were disappointed Dave, I think you are probably right on the money. It feels stronger on the street cause the Spyder will build HP in higher rpm, but the 1/8 is won by torque which the spyder isn't good for without boost or some very high-flow heads, this is the same reason I've thought about losing the spyder from my new motor. I'm sure you car would perform better in the 1/4 than the 1/8. At the level of these cars, HP wins 1/4, TQ wins 1/8. What did you end up launching at, how bad did it bog off the line?

I would like to see the differance in the dyno charts as well, because I really think that intake is what is really hurting you. There is no reason why you car shouldnt be running faster then it is. Even if the et was low it should still be mphing closer to 90.
You may have gained peak power, but if you lost all your low end torque, there is nothing to push the car. It is all about the area under the curve, and not the peak number. I dont know it may be a tunning issue, or maybe even the gas. who knows too many varialbes. Next time, check the timing, and run 93 and see how it does, then move from there.
2cammer97
01-05-2003, 02:19 PM
dave- i agree with matt and bj. even if your car is heavy it should still trap around 90 mph in the 1/8 no problem. sounds like there are a lot of variables you should check. area under the curve is what counts, not peak numbers. with your setup i would think your torque should be higher than your hp.
marcus
stroker95
01-05-2003, 02:37 PM
i agree with all of you. there are a lot of variables to consider. as far as the dyno is concerned, it peaked 24 rwhp higher with this intake over my trick flow track heat. it lost peak torque. the curve is longer over the previous pulls, and it just keeps going up, i could make more rwhp, but im out of valve spring at 6500. and it wants to spin past 7. no vacuum to the regulator is the first thing im gona fix. probably one of the vacuum control midules in the fender is out, cause its the factory vacuum line running to the regulaot. ill fix that and go from there. the ignition id all fine. the chip has never really been "dyno" tuned. that may help. and im thinking even more gear than the 3:90's in the car now. i want to run the 1/4 and see how it does. it trapped with the old intake a highest of 89.8 mph. so i know it will run. it spun the 28x10.5 slicks especially in first gear. and even worse on the dr's. bogged down when not leaving very hard. car makes great power, but not below 4k like it did with the other intake. thinking its more of a "street" car or 1/4 mile car rather than an 1/8 mile car, or need forced induction with this intake. im not changing that intake, lol. 200 shot might be a god idea as well. lots to consider. ran a best of8.7/84. now thats lousy for the amount of pawer it makes. will work on this and keep yall posted.
dave.
that is a good place to get started, I thought it was weard that you had no vaume at all. I know a big cam will cause a little vacume lose, but there was none. :D That will help, plus adding, or taking out some timing. I would go to a dyno, and rent it for an hour, and see what it does, start out with timing, and fuel pressure and go from there. That will help alot. You will be surprised alot how much you can pick up with just those to varialbles.
stroker95
01-05-2003, 03:00 PM
already done the dyno with fuel pressure and timing.made best power at about 17 degrees and 44 psi. but wasnt paying attenting to the vacuum problem at that time. going back some time and see what will happen. want to try working on the chip too. dont think the race fuel is helping, lol.

dave. That was one of the things I thought about too. If your car is tunned on 93, and you bump the octane, normally you need to drop fuel pressure, and add timing, that may have hurt it. That is why I think you should just run 93 next time. A little race gas is ok, because it will even out the fuel a little, and ward off detination, as it did in my car. We only added half a gallon, and I already had a 1/4 of 93, so It really didnt change my fuel as much as it did you.
I definatly bet that vacume will help alot. I bet you can turn your static fuel pressure down to 36-38, and I bet it will run better all over the band.
If you are seeing 40-44 psi with no vacume, and not seeing any vacume at all on the regulator, it is really hurting your low end power, and that is what you need in the 1/8th, if you can get that vacume fixed, and the pressure dialed in, I bet you will notice a definate differance, and another couple tenths, and couple mph in the 1/8th
stroker95
01-05-2003, 03:11 PM
well, lol, let the tuning begin, lol. see you all at sonic tonight for all of you that are going, instead of replacing that vacuum managment valve, im just gonna tee off into the source vacuum, set and go drive it, see how it goes. see yall tonight. i wont get out of church until close to 8. so we will be there after that.
dave.
ps. thanks everyone for not ragging my ass for having a lot of power and not running worth a crap. shows a lot of maturity on the members part. besides, if someone talks trash, we know how this thing does on the street, lol.thanks a lot to all of you.
dave.:D

01-05-2003, 03:11 PM
I forgot you were running a little race gas in the car......You might not have enough ignition power to light off the a/f mixture if you are really running as rich as I think you are. If your a/f is down in the 11's or even 10's which is where I think it might be, you have so much fuel that the plugs aren't lighting it ALL off.
I would start at getting vacuum to the regulator and then tune for ideal a/f. Then see if the car comes to life.
Bye the way, how much low end torque did you lose?
Also, if the engine wants to go to 7k and that is the power band for the intake and cam, you have got to get the right valve springs or they are floating so bad you aren't going to be able to tune it right.
too many parts and pieces to deal with.
stroker95
01-05-2003, 03:14 PM
it lost 28 rear wheel torque. it was almost totally race fuel. only had about a gallon of 93 in it and put 4.5 gallons of b35 in it. going to go fix the vvacuum now. will let yall know tonight. hey marcus answer your cellphone, lol.
check your pm's.
dave.
I would take your regulator vacume directly off the manifold vacume. does your intake have any vacume ports.
stroker95
01-05-2003, 04:06 PM
regulator has vacuum now. just ran a new line from source to the regulator. set it at 37 off, went to 30 on vacuum. will drive to church and to sonic tonight. one problem at a time, lol. you know, far as long as i was a ford technician, i didnt even think there wasnt vacuum to the regulator because i used the factory regulator vacuum line. see hnow it runs, see yall tonight.

Stroker95,
I think from driving your car, it really felt no better than my 01 Cobra. You really need to find out the true cr of the motor, remember that intake is filling the cylinders much slower than that track heat was. So with more cr you get back all the cylinder pressure and pick up air speed and not detonate. Most 5.0l with long runner intakes fill the cylinders very quickly, which is fine for 5k rpms shifts, but when you add 11:1cr to these type of intakes they detonate like crazy unlike the spyder type intake. Just look at the ls1,lt1 intakes the chevy guys learned long ago.
You might pick back up with a Performer intake due to the mild cr of the motor and that cam.
I am not saying that intake(spyder) will work on every combo, just not well with Dave's cr and cam.

seems like most people with these cars have a hard time running good times, especially the 6 speeds. I did an 8.6@85 my first time ever with a badly slipping clutch. got drug by an auto on DR's though

I didnt see you post what you drive. Are you that much better. Maybe your car should be Jan. car of the month.

well, i suppose since there was only a couple of days left in december that they decided to do it for january. im just really honored to have recieved it mainly.makes all the investment and work that ive put into it worthwhile, lol.
as far as the car goes, if nobody purchases it over the next few months, then some changes will be made. looking at a solid roller and more compression, possibly an svo block. maybe also some nitrous as well. would like to make a little over 500 at the flywheel on motor before the spray. might be pretty neat. also, thanks guys for having my back on this other issue, shows what a class act most of the people on this board really are.
