We have a small Apex server at work with some Voice Recognition software running on it. The box runs SCO Unix and seems to run OK, until last week. It has dual power supplies for redundancy and 1 went out. OK, great, the system stayed up like it should. I call to order another (no maintenance contract on system) and they send a quote to me. For 1 power supply it is $1400.00 It looks almost like a regular PC power supply, except the shape, so I can't just find one and replace it. It's not like this is some high-end server, it's basically a pc in a rather large case that says APEX Voice Communications on the front of it. What a freaken rip off!

I bet I could pull the boards and drive out, install it in a PC and get it running in no time, but the work that system does needs to stay up 24x7 so we are stuck buying a $1400.00 power supply.

$1,400 power supply? Does that come with the lube? Jesus lap dancing Christ! It must come with a generator and solar power hookups lol

The only other company I know of that would charge an insane amount of money for a part like that is Sun Microsystems. Price their parts, which I'm sure you have at one time or another, and their stuff is just off the wall expensive. And I though Sony was proud of their parts lol

I buy Sun servers left and right, they are pricey! We now get refurbed Sun equipment, it is 65 - 70% less than new, comes with a 24 month warranty and is eligible for Sun H/W support.:D
