View Full Version : Yellow 03 Cobra on I-45 S, Saturday

I finally got to beat one instead of getting beat by one. ;)
He slowly passed me just outside of Dowtown on 45 headed south. I think he was on his way to Ennis. It was Yellow with a catback and also with "eaton inside" stickers in the rear 1/4 windows.
He slowly passed me and gave my car the once over, smirked and kept rolling. I came up on his driver's side down shifted to 3rd and looked at him. He smiled and waited a moment then we hit it. I pulled a car on him as we had to shut it down because we were approaching other cars. I guess he then got really serious because he wanted a rematch. So this time we had plenty of room and he got on my side and this time we really got at it...........I downshifted to third and again I put about 1.5-2 cars on him then we shut down.
He rolled down the windows and said something that I couldn't make out. He was motioning with his hands. I thought he wanted to run again. So this time I downshifted to 2nd and punched it. He wasn't trying to run me again, which was good because I got all squirrley in my rolling 2nd gear punch. :(
He was cool. Anyone know him? Nick, Morey, Xstang?

He is known as Coleman over at the SVT forums.
His webpage is here- Coleman (http://www.fragfest.biz/~coleman/)
His car has the basic mods (pulley/chip/exhaust) at this time. He does live in Murphy.

The houses look just like the ones that my buddy lives at in Murpy. And the guy across the street has an 03 yellow cobra.
I wonder if that is him.

I know the feeling with the cammed/juiced SS/Z06 crowd around here.
I am at 474/502 without the juice now. I finally got serious about changing the outcome with this car. There are still a lot of people I will not tangle with but at least I now make a decent showing most of the time. I plan on doing the Kenne Bell S/C and an auto in March.
I miss being in Dallas. I lived there for 27 years and just moved to Houston. The main problem around here is 75% of the guys on the streets are ricers, not even worth the gas to blip the throttle. ;)

Don, check out the N/A dyno run just before the turbo went on. (http://www.dfwstangs.net/hosting/302_plus_a_few/dyno_run1.jpg) The turbo dyno was capped up through the cats. When I uncap it, the dyno graph, looks a lot like the N/A but with higher values of course. ;)

Coleman, What did you run at Ennis?
I am sure JC is glowing after this win!:D
NickSVT03
11-18-2002, 07:21 AM
BTW JC here are his mods and HP numbers:
2003 Zinc yellow cobra
- 2.80" pulley (slipping badly)
- CAI & hood MODs courtesy postban
- Nitto 555R 315/35 (rear)
- Eaton Inside stickers
- Pro 5.0 shifter
- Diablo chip
- 442 hp / 480 tq
- QMP 3" exhaust
- boost & A/F gauges
- 155+ stickers
- MM full-length SFC
He is putting down 20 more lbs of tq than me but the same HP.

Coleman ran a 12.8 at Ennis Friday night. Not bad considering it was his first time ever to the track. I was there with a bunch of other 03 Cobras from SVTPerformance.Com. I am basically stock (CAI) and I pulled a 13.02 - trying too hard for 12's and launching at 3500 RPMs rewarded me with teeth rattling wheel hop. Looks like 13.02 will have to do until next time...

Coleman- Good to run ya. I can't believe I beat you. Nick handed me my butt, so I can't understand why I beat you.
I did have some bad tuning when I ran Nick but, I doubt that it mattered. You have me cofused. Oh well, good runs.

MonsoonX,
What is your typical trap speed in the 1/4... If Nick isn't on spray he should be trapping 118-120, with full exhaust, Ligntning pulley and chip.... Kumar the Blue cammed Z06 trapped 119.4 and I beat him by 1/2 car to 150.... (I have Longtubes and an offroad exhaust) ..
No offense Nick, but I would say that your car with an average driver is 117-118.. If Nick is an A++ driver, I could see 120 in his car.....
I went to the 03 Cobra shootout and did my homework with comparing mods to trap speeds... I have over an hour footage of 03 Cobra track runs... Most guys with all the bolt ons if they have cats with stock headers trap 117-118.. Offroad and headers 119-120.... (with a A++ driver 121-122)
Sorry so long, but I should be close..... The fastest that I have seen is 135 with NOS

NickSVT03,
The MGW handle on the stock shifter works very well. PM me and I will send one your way, no charge. I had this setup and just went to the Pro5.0 with the MGW handle. I used the DynaExtreme around the base and it helped a great deal. The best change so far in the transmission area was switching over to Red Line D4 ATF. The transmission shifts easier and is very quiet now.

How much Redline for the T56? I need to do this. BTW I have the Pro-5.0 which I love. Add the Redline and a new adjustable quadrant/cable thingamajiggy and it SHOULD be a sweet powershifting ride. I have the quadrant on the work bench now.
Coleman needs a new belt bad and he's still practicing so give him some time.
Rick: you're right on the mods: I ran 118.5mph w/ the L pulley/exhaust/chip. I probably coulda sqeaked out another 1-2 mph w/ powershifting 1-2 and 2-3 but the tires weren't gonna hold that..

Why don't 03 owners buy the corresponding belt when they do the pulley swap?
Jerry
11-18-2002, 02:11 PM
Debate over which is the right size belt.. At first it was thought a 2.93" pulley needed a 75" belt, then 74.5" belt and now that someone has been able to crowbar the tensioner against the stops and put a 74" belt on there we all want to do it! :)
XSTANG
11-18-2002, 02:14 PM
I'm using a 74 inch with a 2.93 pulley...
Jerry

I get a whiff of burning belt when I take mine to redline.. just ordered the same..

They generally do. Some pulleys (ex: 3.4 or 3.2) could probably use the stock belt. The 2.93 and 2.80 require a smaller belt so they really couldn't run at all without getting it. The problem with the 2.8 and to a lesser degree the 2.93 is that it requires so much force to turn the Eaton that fast that the belt, regardless of size, may slip some in the higher rpms.

These belt sizes will not slip if installed correctly based upon my experience to date. The sizes change if you are running a lower pulley. ;)
Goodyear Gatorback Belt 4080745 - 3.2" Pulley
Goodyear Gatorback Belt 4080745 - 3.1" Pulley
Goodyear Gatorback Belt 4080740 - 2.93" Pulley
Goodyear Gatorback Belt 4080735 - 2.80" Pulley
I am going with a 3.1 and 6lb lower this Wednesday. I am running a 2.93 and 2lb lower currently. This setup worked better than the 2.80 I tried last month.
Jerry,
The shop I visit did the fluid change over. I will get the correct amount required shortly. I also switched over to a Spec2 clutch and Spec 3 PP setup. I might try a complete Spec3 package if I ever get the right amount of rubber on the ground. I tried a set of Pilot Sport 295/35/18(rear)/275/35/18(front) on chrome Cobra R "2000" rims this weekend that looked really good and did bite better on the street. I never visit the track so I am trying to find the right street setup. I am lowering the suspension next week and bought the Amazon Racing "no wheel hop" kit.

The Kit works great. I used it to change out the pulley on my Lightning, then we also used to to put the Lightning pulley on my friends 03. Just becareful not to bend the shaft in the snout of the s/c. It will scare the shit out of you the first time you use it because it will pop real loud when it breaks loose !!

XStang,
Jim Vaccaro stated the stage 1 kit will eliminate the majority of wheel hop. There is a new bushing kit that is suppose to cure the remaining first gear wheel hop (cold/rough surfaces) with the stage one kit. I ordered mine based upon his comments. He is one guy I trust when it comes to these issues. I think Rick has a winner with this kit. I am still waiting on Vaccaro to respond about handling in the corners with the new shocks but Rick said they should be equal to or better. My kit should be here next week in time for the Eibach install.
NickSVT03
11-18-2002, 03:36 PM
Does the stage 1 kit come with springs, or just the brushings and such?

Stage One is just the shocks and installation hardware. Stage Two has the springs. The bushings are a separate item.

Jerry,
Forgot to post this, sorry.
The transmission takes (4) quarts or enough until it comes out of the top plug. After some time with the new fluid the tranmission has really settled down. Of course going to a Spec2 clutch and Spec3 PP helped a bit also.
Jerry
11-21-2002, 03:27 PM
Bingo, thanks for the reply. Doing the tranny fluid today. How do you like that clutch combo? Does it chatter at all? How is the effort compared to the factory clutch? Thx!
Jerry
bingo13
11-21-2002, 04:31 PM
Jerry,
A small amount of chatter still exists but seems to be better than the stock setup warm or cold. The Spec3 PP causes a little more effort but I have not complained about it in rush hour traffic yet. The full Spec3 package would be too stiff for daily driving. The current Spec2/3 combination seems perfect for my power range and still allows the car to be driven in traffic. I am an old fart so the pedal effort does matter to me. ;)
I probably could have done just fine with the Spec2 package but I wanted some safety since I plan on having the juice available for those pesky LS1 encounters. :D
