View Full Version : Pet peeves at the gym?

Another thread got me to thinking about this, and I remember talking to someone else about this. There some things that bug you that some people do at the gym? Here's a little of mine:
Bringing a cell phone- If you know it's going to ring, don't bring it. Better yet, don't bring it at all.
Treadmill hogs- Do you really need a treadmill to just "walk"? Use the track and count the laps.
Zero effort girls- You know the ones. Show up every month or so for their "workout" of pushing 5 lbs while looking bored the whole time.
Roid abusers- And you can spot these guys. The ones that look like they'll rip the skin of their neck if they smile.
Sweatshirt girls- The ones that wear their sweatshirt around their waist to hide their butt they're embarrassed about. We know it's big, putting something over it only makes it stand out more.
Weight slammers- We know you can lift a lot. We don't need to hear it every time. I hope your finger gets caught next time.
Fat fitness experts- And you want to motivate us? Practice what you preach, then we might listen.
I know there are probably more, I'll just have to think of them. ;)

Lethal...its like we go to the saaaaaammme gym! I agree with all of yours... and I'll add a few.
Sweat hogs.we all sweat..but please wipe down the equipment. Ugh!
Grunters..you kmow the peeps...the ones that grunt on everything they do but you look over and its weight your grandpa could lift. Attention whores.
Perverts...the ones that "secretly" watch the women on certain equipment. Ie....Inner thigh machines, full busted women on treadmills, leg curl bench, etc...etc....I once saw a guy with a porn magazine open up in front of him as he did curls....he was staring at the photos...
Lazy Lifters the ones that dont rack their weights when they are done. This is problematic on the sleds. I dont care to be returning 6 45lb plates before I start my sets.
Singers......the ones with headphones but are singing loud enough that you know what song they are listening to.
Those are just a few...Im not bitter...really. :D

machine/bench squatters - rest is important for growth, but when you are done with a set MOVE. Gyms are getting more crowded as the new year approaches, you may not be in a hurry to leave, but the rest of us are on a schedule.
Eyes are bigger than his bi's - form and control are far more important than heavy weight. Swinging up a weight that's twice what you should be lifting does nothing for your progress and lets the rest of us know how little you know about exercise.
The Jabber Jaw - these people spend about 30 minutes doing actual exercise and the other two hours they are in the gym is spent chatting with other unmotivated people. See also: "machine squatters"

At the one I go to in Carrollton now, it's even worse. All the nice pulley exercise machines are in front of the aerobics area, which they have something EVERY night. I have to wait for these horn dogs all the time to get these good machines.
Another one:
The princesses- The girls who come in all dolled up, and smelling like French whores. One came into the sauna, and a lot of us felt sick from the perfume. Stick to the bar scene if that's all you're there for.

LMAO at all those- they are so true.....
IDIOTS that don't do exercises properly.....
you know the ones that are doing them way to quickly, (like bench) with no form at all- just bouncing the bar up and down off their chest. They do a ton of weight, but do them all wrong, so what does it matter. I literally want to laugh sometimes......i am no expert, but some of these people are just stupid.....
NASTY ACNE ROID GUYS- i am tired of looking at the huge nasty zits on your back, please don't wear that little tank top that only exposes your nasty habit all the more. We have a huge guy that is hitting the roids hard, and it is gross how broken out he is- total pizza face- grosses me out everytime i see him......
HIGH SCHOOL TEENY BOPPERS- you know the 15 year old cheerleader chics that come in there in their tiny cotton shorts and don't really do anything but walk around and get in your way? Hell they don't have to workout, they have cute little figures for the time being- but they are always in the way and just chatting up a storm while i try and concentrate.
I agree on-
i hate the idiots that don't rack their weights and leave me with 8 45pounders to take off.....have some courtesy.....plus you don't know if someone is still on that equipment or not...
We have one chic that just sits on the equipment and socializes- i swear one night she was on the same machine for like 30 minutes and i never once saw her use it- she was just jabbering to the hot guys that walked by. That so gets on my nerves.
The sweatshirt wearers- tied around the waist.....LMAO at that one! so true......I know my ass is big and I don't give a damn.....so i don't bother doing that. YOu are right, just draws more attention - especially when it is 100 degrees outside and they have a sweatshirt on their waist? i mean, come on- how stupid does that look? just wear normal shorts instead of the spandex and they don't have to worry about it.

Tiny cotton shorts are a little known supplement that helped me gain a solid 10 extra pounds of mass.

guys on the gyno machines... just funny really...
girls who move 5lb weights around (on every exercise) exerting no effort what-so-ever
ShawnQ
10-29-2002, 05:04 PM
Water Hogs- The guy/girl who stands at the water fountain for a solid 5 minutes lapping it up while splashing it all over the already slippery tile underneath it. You're going to get a stomach ache.
Wheezers- The guy/girl who is on the treadmill, stairmaster, or other cardio machine who is wheezing so bad it sounds like a fire alarm. Moderation is the key.
The stinky kid in class- The guy (usually) who stinks so bad it reminds you of 4th grade and that kid who didn't know what a shower was. I know we all sweat, but proper hygiene(sp?) will prevent it from being so bad!
The Attention whore- Almost always a girl, purposely doing bent over rows (in the guys part of the gym, when there is a female area available), double-d's about to fall out, thong line showing through the hot-pants. (Us guys dont mind this, but I couldn't be too biased or the frog may attack ;) )
The russian from 'Rocky'- The guy who walks around the whole time, fully flexed, and turns sideways just to make it through a doorway. C'mon dude, we know you're big....
Just a few that bug me...except for the attention whore, except for when she's uglier than sin...
Shawn

And, BTW, what's worse than the girl acting as if she is doing something with 5lbs, is the gay guys trying to act feminine doing the same thing as the girls...

Oh man do I know what you are talking about. There are a few of them that think they are the only fucking people in the gym. One of the gorillas actually bumped into me one night because I didn't move when we were walking past each other. I wanted to kick his ass but I didn't think the result would have been in my favor so I just kept walking.:(

I hate it when people don't rack their weights:mad:, I just remember all the pushups and sprints from high school when we didn't rack our weights, almost want to make them run sprints! I let them know when it looks like they are about to leave a machine to rack the f*ckin' weights (guys be mean to if the dumbass doesn't rack, girls just ask politely;) )
I don't use roids but I do know that my back breaks out pretty bad, I at least know not to wear a friggin' tanktop, I know the girls hate to see a zitted back and I can't stand looking at my own back in the mirror when it looks like pizza:( (can't wait for this growing up/acne sh*t to end)
BTW, I love those attention whores because fairly often I'll end up working out with just one girl in there (small gym at apt. complex) and they just always seem to get in the way of the mirror and me working out (to watch form, not a narcissist) when it's just as easy to go behind me, especially when I've only got like a yard between me and the mirror. You always see them looking around to see if anyone is watching them or looking in the mirror to catch someone watching. Fun to peek glances but you know it's gotta piss them off when people just want to work out:cool:

People who are too good to rack their own weights.
People that find it necessary to take their cell phones onto the gym floor. My fucking goodness, there ain't no one that important, sans GWB, that you have to do that. Esp if you have one of those stupid ass gay sounding songs as your ringer.
People who don't want to get their hands dirty and flush the urinal. Use your freakin' elbow if you have to.
Sweaty nasty inbreds who don't towel off equipment after use. I sweat like a stuck pig, but I'll clean up after myself. Hell I'll even disinfect the damn treadmill when I run on it.

BACKNEE is the worst. There is this one guy that works out the same time i do everyday. He wears shirts my 12 year old sister wears and cuts them so they show his muscles. He has the worst backnee i have ever seen, along with a chipped front tooth that is black. It is absolutely discusting.
I do not think having a cell phone is a problem. As long as you have it on silent and dont try and work out or run while you are on the phone. Some people have to keep them at all times, whether it be for business, or for home. But you usually get the girls that will be doing curls, or shoulder press, while talking on the cell phone.
Also, the guys that spend like 30 min. doing one exercise, that should only take about 10 min. at the most. They walk around the gym, go get a drink, bend over like they just ran a marathon, between every set.
The people that leave the equipment like they are done, then you go and start taking the weight off and putting your weight on, then they come back and say "thats my weight and i wasnt done"
I do like going around the time that it is kind of busy though. I meet alot of interesting people there.
shit dont get me started, I worked for 24 hour fitness for 2 years, I have seen more shit then you care to know.

Not only is this a biiiig pet peeve of mine, why do gyms feel the need to employ these people?! It's bad enough to watch these people opitimizing "do as I say, not as I do", but should they actually get paid for it too?! I personally would not seek advice from anyone that hasn't already achieved where I want to go. Experience is the best teacher, and something tells me that tubby over there, though he may have alot of "knowlege", doesn't have a lick of experience as his body well shows. Is this a new reverse psychology motivation ploy? Is working out with these trainers supposed to digust me into never wanting become them?...

One of the front desk guys at my gym is - no joke - probably about 300 pounds. He actually sits up there munching down on McDonalds and do-nuts.
Bad thing is - the desk is located RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE CARDIO equipment. Smart move, dumbass.

LOL....I feel your pain as well.
I've been taught that your workout isn't done until your weights are put away.
If you bring a phone in, it's not necessarily going to disturb my workout, but it going to kill yours. Whoever it is can wait a while.
And there are times I think I bring my towel more for other people than myself.

UGH I don't understand the fact that some people can't live without a phone attached to their ear.
Oh yeah a BIG pet peave is when your standing in line for water(and gymX only has one damn fountain) and the guy or girl in front of you is filling his/her 44 OUNCE water bottle for like 10 minutes and has no consideration for the LONG ASS line behind them.
Another is when you start using a machine and somone says "I'm sorry I still have a few more sets."(and the man happens to be wearing daisy dukes so i refuse to work in a set with him) and so you kindly go to another machine and "wait" for him to finish, only he shoots the shit with someone else for 30 minutes. And I'm not exagerating. This person didn't touch the machine for the entire 30 minutes while he was yapping his mouth.
-and oh yeah the grunting can be kept to a minimum. From my experience its the roiders that usually do that.
-always wipe your machine after use!!!!
and the roiders who sit and pose in the mirror all day long......

I'm on a schedule when I'm in the gym, I've learned to be a little forceful with these folks. I pay my dues as well, and have no desire to sit around and wait on the chit chat.
Another group that annoys me are the "clangers". These are the guys and gals that let the weight stack come crashing down, or the dumbells come smashing together as if the noise is a growth stimulus or something.

I heard that!!!!! Clangers sux!!! These are the people who don't know how to lift properly. I was taught that a slow negative is the most important part of the rep.

That's exactly what I was taught too, was to make the negative slower, which is the more important part of the rep.

well the solution to all that bs is do what i did get a bowflex and leave it at that i work out at home while watching tv so i dont have to mess with all that sweat on the bench from some lazy ass who doesnt want to carry a towel or some little blonde cheerleader who is just their to look cute. and the damn thing actually works pretty good :D

I've done the whole GYM at home shit. In fact I did it for awhile. I get more motivation going to a real gym than a home gym.
HUGE people wearing tight clothing on the treadmills or ski machines ! Not only is it distracting but its gross to watch them jiggle all over !
I'm a chubby guy, just started working out again, but I would NEVER wear some of this stuff that people do. They think just cause they are working out they can wear whatever they want.

I came across another pet peeve this weekend (and it's not the first time), it's people that spit/ spit their come into the water fountain. What is up with people?! Do they think it will dissolve into the water or magically dissappear. Now spitting yes, after a few nastified moments it will get sucked down the drain, but gum?!?!?! I have yet to actually catch someone in the act of spitting it out, and for their sake I hope I don't.

LOL...I have a new one that I noticed today.
People who are barely lifting any weight at all, do a few reps for a few seconds then spend the next 15 minutes flexing in the mirror (muscles they dont have )
Lol, since this thread has started I have been noticing alot more at the gym !

OH get this......So I am the gym and it has a cardio room that is set up to look like a club inside. They even play club music. Its different and it gets you motivated. ANYWAY, I'm on the stairmaster trying to burn the carbs off from the weekends beer binge. Well just as I'm about to start I notice the guy next to me start raising his hand up and down. At first I was like oh hes just stretching. Then the queer starts dancing on the damn stairmaster. Meanwhile I'm thinking is this guy fucking serious? He was getting into too like he was at the club. I look across the room to see if anyone else noticed and some girls saw the look on my face(puzzled) and they started laughing. I thought it was hilarious. I'm sure you guys now the kind of person I'm talking about. Wears dazy dukes to the gym with a tank top and beanie on his head!!!LOL
